Meggitt wins Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine condition monitoring

Meggitt PLC (Meggitt), the international aerospace, defence and electronic
sensors group, today announces that Vibro-Meter, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Meggitt, has been contracted by Rolls-Royce to provide the on-engine monitoring
unit (EMU) for its Trent 1000 engine. As the launch engine on the Boeing 787 '
Dreamliner', the Trent 1000 will have its first test in early 2006 and first
flight in 2007. The value of the EMU contract to Meggitt is estimated at more
than #50 million over the next 20 years.

The EMU will be a significant element in Rolls-Royce's Total Care programme
(provision of comprehensive engine maintenance for airlines). Via a wide range
of parameters-more than 30 external and internal sensor inputs-it will identify
and quantify the engine's condition over many thousands of flying hours. The
EMU system comprising Meggitt's state of the art platform and Rolls-Royce's
proprietary algorithms will continuously acquire and process data, detect
anomalies and provide the most advanced, prognostic engine health management
data in the world.

Richard Greaves, Managing Director of Meggitt's Aerospace Systems' division of
which Vibro-Meter forms a part, says: 'In today's immensely pressured
marketplace, simple monitoring for potential problems is not good enough. To
reduce operating costs, it is essential to have the diagnostic and prognostic
capability to actively manage the maintenance of engines and other systems. The
EMU system is in the vanguard of predictive tools, enabling the maintenance of
aero engine's to be conducted in a proactive manner identifying engine faults
precisely, and allowing maintenance activities to be scheduled thus avoiding
unnecessary surprises.

The selection of Vibro-Meter by Rolls-Royce follows a close working relationship
established between the two companies during the development of the on-engine
EMU for the Airbus A380's Trent 900 engine.

The Trent 1000 EMU Integrated Product Team (IPT), which will include Vibro-Meter
personnel, will be based at Rolls-Royce's Bristol facility in the United
Kingdom.
