Verilink Announces Plans to Extend Optical Ethernet Access Platform to Address International Market Company to Introduce SDH-Version of Orion 7400 Product MADISON, Ala., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Verilink Corporation (NASDAQ:VRLK), a leading provider of broadband access solutions, today announced plans to extend the Orion(TM) 7400 Optical Multiservice Access Transport Platform to address the growing demand in the international market for SDH-based Optical Ethernet transport services. The Orion 7400, which currently supports Ethernet over SONET (EoS), gives carriers a profitable business case for fiber extension beyond the reach of existing metro rings to large and mid-sized enterprises, enabling the delivery of flexible Ethernet-based services as well as traditional TDM services on a mass-market basis. The Orion 7400 is also a highly cost-effective solution for upgrading legacy SONET and SDH Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADMs) to enable the delivery of Ethernet services. "Ethernet is quickly becoming the transport solution of choice for data services worldwide," said Sab Gosal, vice president of marketing for Verilink. "We are seeing growing demand among international carriers looking to extend their SDH-based optical infrastructures to deliver Ethernet-based VLAN and private line services. Due to the high concentration of businesses and tele- densities in metro regions of major markets such as Asia, where fiber optic infrastructure deployments are accelerating, the Orion 7400 is the ideal access solution for Enterprise data applications." "The Metro Ethernet market is growing rapidly on a global basis with equipment revenues totaling $3 Billion in 2003, and predicted growth of 157% to $7.7 Billion expected in 2007," said Michael Howard, Principle Analyst at Infonetics Research. "The bulk of Metro Ethernet equipment revenue continues to come from the Asia Pacific region, followed by North America and then EMEA. The economic and service-enabling capabilities offered by new generation products such as the Orion 7400 are driving the rapid growth in this segment." The 1RU high Orion 7400 is one of the first products of its kind to incorporate standard Generic Framing Procedure (GFP)-based Ethernet over SONET technology, including LCAS and both Low-order (VT1.5/VC-12) and High-order (STS-1/VC-n) Virtual Concatenation (VCAT), enabling the provisioning and delivery of flexible bandwidth levels in small 1.5/2Mbps or large 34/45 Mbps increments. In the U.S., the SONET version of the Orion 7400 is undergoing customer trials at several major domestic carriers, including a major Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC), an InterXchange Carrier (IXC), and several Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs). The company plans to introduce the SDH version of its Orion 7400 product line in the first half of 2005.
