Emerging Growth
Good Entry point into the stock... More on http://www.EmergingGrowth.com The American housing sector seems to have bottomed out. Many experts are convinced it is picking up again. And this is why Headwaters Inc. (NYSE: HW), a leading manufacturer in the sector, is finding a fertile niche.
Headwaters produces building products for new residential, residential remodeling, and commercial construction. Headquartered in South Jordan, Utah, it is one of America’s greatest recycling success stories. It eliminated 75 percent of paper waste at its corporate headquarters, and its pallets are repaired for re-usability. Its online documents and instructional video allow it to consume less paper, ink and energy.
But that is not what is most interesting about this company. Its Siding Accessories products control approximately 75% of their niche market, while its manufactured stone products take roughly 25% market share. Apart from this, the company’s concrete block business dominates the Texas block market with roughly 65% of the market. Headwaters Resources / Heavy Construction Materials segment controls almost half of all fly ash sales in the U.S. today.
Headwaters recently announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire the assets of Kleer Lumber, Inc., a manufacturer of high quality and Eco-friendly cellular PVC trim board and molding products. If successful, the acquisition of Kleer Lumber will add such products as trim boards, millwork, sheet stock, and paneling to Headwaters’ Light Building Products offerings.
In its 2012 fourth quarter report, Headwaters’ revenue increased 8% to $633 million, while its gross profit margin improved by 230 basis points to 29.8%. Also operating income increased 120% to $15.9 million, while the company repaid $3.5 million of subordinated debt in the quarter. Gross profit increased by 16% to $56.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to $49.0 million in the fourth quarter of 2011.
“We continued to see revenue growth in the fourth quarter, driven primarily by improvements in new residential construction and market share gains,” said Kirk A. Benson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Headwaters. “We maintained exceptional operating leverage with contribution margins in excess of 47%, greatly expanding operating income in an up market. For the quarter, operating income grew by 120% to $15.9 million.”
Due to the rebound of the housing industry, the numbers will become even stronger in the future. Meanwhile, Headwaters sports a conservative business model, having a market capitalization of $599 million and trading around $9.79 per share. Its 52-week range is between $2.26 and $9.79. Though it seems to be have peaked, it trades at a cheap rate compared to bigger rivals such as Cemex , SAB (NYSE: CX), CRH PLC (NYSE: CRH), and Weyerhaeuser Co (NYSE: WY). This puts it in a good position to reap profit when growth accelerates in the housing sector.

July 29 (Reuters) - Headwaters Inc (HW.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) reported a 70 percent decline in quarterly profit, due to the expiration of some tax credits and the weakness in residential construction market, but managed to beat Wall Street expectations, helped by increased clean coal sales.
Net income for the third quarter fell to $13.7 million, or 31 cents a share, down from $46.4 million, or 98 cents a share, last year.
Total revenue fell 31 percent to $230.5 million.
Analysts polled by Reuters had, on average, expected earnings of 24 cents a share, before special items, on revenue of $229.1 million.
The supplier of building materials and coal combustion products, which had enjoyed tax benefits under Section 45k of the Internal Revenue Code for producing fuel from specified non-conventional sources, said the tax credits came to an end on Dec. 31, 2007.
Clean coal sales for the quarter rose to $13.1 million, compared to less than $0.5 million last year.
"The positive trend in clean coal sales and production will continue as we ramp up more facilities and take advantage of increases in coal prices later this calendar year." the company's Chief Executive Kirk Benson said in a statement.
The company based in South Jordan, Utah, continues to expect 2008 earnings of 60 cents to 75 cents a share. Analysts were expecting 60 cents a share.
Shares of the company, which have fallen more than 14 percent year-to-date, closed at $10.06 Monday on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reporting by Hezron Selvi in Bangalore; Editing by Amitha Rajan)

Headwaters: Future Looks Bright Despite Discontinued Alternative Energy Line by Tim Plaehn
posted on: January 06, 2008
Headwaters, Inc. (HW) has had its stock severely beaten down, probably for good reason, because the business line that has provided 60% of profits basically shut down at the end of 2007. Residual profits from the discontinued alternative energy line will continue at a reduced rate in 2008, then cease. Ouch!
Besides the discontinuing alternative energy business, Headwaters next biggest line is construction materials. This business is tied to new home and commercial construction. We all know how that has been going. Double ouch!
The future, however, looks pretty positive for Headwaters (especially the stock price). HW is in several different business areas, some of which are related to others. The discontinued alternative energy business was related to coal, and the company has taken some of that expertise into new ventures. I will give a brief overview of each:
Coal Combustion Products: Fly ash as a residual of coal combustion is processed and sold as an addition or substitute for Portland cement. The fly ash improves the quality of concrete and is used in some of the construction materials products. Sales of the products continue to grow in spite of the turn down in housing construction.Construction Materials: Accounting for almost half of its revenues, HW sells architectural stone, block, brick and stucco products. Sales have remained steady despite the downturn in home construction and remodeling. New product lines grew at a 22% rate for 2007 and an acquisition increased products and revenues.Coal Cleaning: HW has developed a process to clean coal waste to make it usable. This business should start providing revenue in 2008.HCAT Technology: The company has developed a process to transform residual, heavy bottom of the barrel oil into high value light oil. The technology is in the verification phase at several refineries. The market could be 500,000 barrels of oil per day with up to 80 cents profit per barrel processed. Definitely a growth area in the next few years.Other businesses: A hydrogen peroxide plant in Korea should start providing significant revenue and earnings with growth potential. An existing 50 million gallon ethanol plant should be more profitable in 2008. (I think ethanol producers will surprise with their profits for 2008).So Headwaters is a company with some growth possibilities to replace the lost alternative energy profits. At a PE of 10 to 12 on 2008 projected earnings I think the stock is an excellent value at these levels.

Headwaters 3Q EPS 98c Vs EPS 58c >HW
Dow Jones Newswires - July 31, 2007 6:37 AM ET
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
Headwaters Inc. (HW) reported fiscal third-quarter earnings rose 69% on 14% higher revenue.
For the quarter ended June 30, earnings reached $46.4 million, or 98 cents a share, from $27.4 million, or 58 cents a share, in the year-earlier period.
Revenue rose to $336.3 million from $295.9 million.
A survey of analysts by Thomson Financial produced consensus estimates of 49 cents a share in income, on $299 million of revenue.
In coal combustion, increases in revenue and operating margin "resulted from strong product demand and upward pricing trends in several markets," Headwaters said.
"While we face significant market headwind in our products most exposed to new-home construction, we believe we are making operating improvements to align operations to this new environment," the company said.

U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., has introduced legislation in
the Senate to increase the use of recovered mineral components in
certain federally funded manufacturing projects.
"When coal is burned at electricity generating plants, approximately
70 million tons of the byproduct material is created and had to be
disposed of each year. These kind of byproducts should be utilized
in a manner which benefits both the environment and the consumer,"
Byrd said.
Byrd's legislation, S.793, would promote the increased use of
recovered mineral components in federal projects involving the
production of cement or concrete. Components including primarily fly
ash, a coal combustion byproduct, and slag, a material produced
during steel manufacturing, can be beneficially used for concrete
manufacturing.
"Using fly ash and slag is cost effective and it makes the finished
concrete stronger and more durable. At the same time, the
environmental benefits are significant. When recovered materials
replace cement in concrete production, energy is saved and carbon
dioxide emissions are reduced. In fact, using just one ton of fly
ash can displace one ton of emitted greenhouse gases," Byrd stated.
"Fly ash is a valuable national mineral resource produced by the
combustion of coal at electric generating stations. It extends the
life cycle of roads and structures by improving the durability of
concrete. The increase utilization of ash contributes a net
reduction in energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions,"
said Rafic Minkara. Dr. Minkara is co-chair of the American Coal Ash
Association's technical committee and vice president of Headwaters
Incorporated.
The legislation would help to spur the use of recovered mineral
materials in federal projects. Specifically it would:
• Require a study by the Environment Protection Agency Administrator
and the Secretaries of Energy and Transportation to determine the
environmental benefits associated with implementing current federal
procurement requirements regarding the use of recovered materials;
and
• Direct federal agency heads to implement existing procurement
requirements, to develop additional requirements, and to eliminate
barriers to using recovered materials.
"Considering the environmental and economic advantages to using
recovered materials in concrete production, it only makes sense that
federal agencies should make the use of such products a top priority
for government-funded projects. My legislation would urge agencies
to start complying with existing law and to seek out further
opportunities for using recovered products," Byrd stated.
"The Department of Energy is committed to increasing the
environmentally sound use of coal combustion byproducts, including
fly ash, to 50 percent of the amount produced annually by 2010,"
explained Tom Feeley of the Department of Energy's National Energy
Technology Laboratory. "The department's research program recognizes
the economic benefit of the commercial use of these products while
reducing the need for landfill space for the disposal of the
material."
