The index is still 6.61 percent higher on the calendar year. Before the start of the regular session today, the First quarter Current Account is expected to have burgeoned to a minus $141.50 billion from the last reported $127.50 billion shortfall. The Federal Reserve got more evidence to raise rates in two weeks, with news that consumer prices jumped 0.6% in May -- the largest monthly gain since January 2001. Vibrant oil prices pushed up gasoline costs by 8.1%, resulting in an overall 4.6% rise in energy prices. Household fuel costs also jumped 3.5%. Excluding volatile energy and food costs, "core" inflation rose 0.2%. But through the first five months of 2004, it has advanced an alarming 2.9%. In Britain, surging oil prices caused inflation to jump to 1.5% over the past month. Although it still remains below the government's 2% target, it's still the highest level in over a year, and the increase from 1.2% in April is worrying. British factory prices also rose for the eighth straight month in May. The Bank of England believes inflation will exceed 2% in two years if the UK economy posts its projected 3.5% growth this year and 2.7% next year. However, the bank's rate hike last week (to 4.5%) should help ease inflationary pressure. In addition, it helps that oil prices are gradually declining following OPEC's recent production increase. Despite that though, Governor Mervyn King says rates are headed higher because current domestic inflationary pressures -- the housing market and consumer debt pose significant risks to the economy.
