Restricts Spending by Health Care Providers initiative – sponsored by California Apartment Association’s greedy landlords – threatens advocacy for women’s reproductive rights

The National Organization for Women (NOW) and several other groups have come out strongly against a punitive November 2024 statewide ballot initiative that would have a dangerous ripple effect on health care providers and nonprofit organizations that advocate on behalf of the people they serve.

The California Apartment Association (CAA) has sponsored the “Restricts Spending by Health Care Providers” ballot initiative which is backed by millions of dollars from deep-pocketed corporate landlords and Big Real Estate and would set a precedent that would harm nonprofit healthcare providers and organizations that fight for reproductive rights.

"The National Organization for Women is opposed to the ‘Restricts Spending by Health Care Providers’ proposition, which is a dangerous initiative that has long-term repercussions for women's reproductive health advocacy," said Christian Nunes, President, National Organization for Women.

Other organizations opposed to the “Restricts Spending by Health Care Providers” ballot initiative include the California Democratic Party Renters' Council, Dolores Huerta Foundation, Veterans' Voices, Consumer Watchdog, Coalition for Economic Survival, UNITE HERE Local 11, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and Housing is a Human Right.
