Chatten Associates, Inc., reports a new application for eMagins
(AMEX:EMA) Z800 3DVisor. The Pennsylvania-based hardware developer
has turned the popular gaming device into a controller for remotely
driven vehicles. We simply modified the 3DVisor to fit on a
soldier's night vision helmet mount, noted John Chatten, CEO and
president, Chatten Associates. Soldiers responsible for disposing
of explosive ordnance use it as part of a head-aimed vision system
to look for road-side bombs. Wherever the soldier looks, the sensor
gimbal-mounted on the vehicle looks (courtesy of the Z800's motion
detectors). For soldiers wearing the system, it's like being out
there, except they don't get hurt if the bomb goes off." Chatten
Associates believes its head-aimed remote viewer (HARV) brings
unmatched tele-operations effectiveness to every remotely operated
vehicle. By providing a compelling level of telepresence, HARV
creates a several-fold increase in situational awareness and
decision speed. Its head-aimed vision process harnesses the natural
visual processing capability of the human mind at an unconscious
level. The result is a 3-4x increase in mission effectiveness and
tele-robotic productivity. Joseph Wu, the U.S. Army Director of the
Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Directorate commented, The
system and technology will greatly benefit current operations and
save lives. Were proud to have created a product that serves so
effectively and can potentially save lives, said Susan Jones,
executive vice president, eMagin Corporation. This is one more
application that takes the Z800 3DVisor beyond gaming and
entertainment. The product is proving to be a useful tool for a
number of simulation applications as well. The Z800 3DVisor
provides superb 3D stereovision and headtracking for PC gaming,
training and simulation, and other applications. At the 2006
Consumer Electronics Show, the Z800 3DVisor won the coveted CEA
Innovation of the Year award in the digital display category and a
Design and Engineering Innovation Award for the electronic gaming
category. The Z800 3DVisor delivers a high-color, high-contrast
virtual image equivalent to a 105-inch screen viewed at twelve
feet, in full-color stereovision. Its high-speed headtracking
provides full 360-degree viewing, enabling users to look around and
move in the virtual world much like they do in the real world. It
is powered by two OLED panels (1.44 million pixels each) with 800 x
600 resolution in more than 16 million colors. Completing the
near-immersive experience is an integrated, audio system with
stereo earbuds and a noise-canceling microphone. To power all these
capabilities, the Z800 3DVisor requires only a standard USB port
and can greatly extend a laptop's battery life when it is used
instead of the standard LCD laptop screen. About Chatten Associates
Founded by John Chatten in 1972 to focus on human/robotic
interfaces, Chatten Associates, Inc. has conducted several DoD and
DARPA contracts to develop the vision systems to provide
vision-based control systems for robotic equipment. The company
also developed a successful line of medical diagnostic equipment
under the brand name Telefactor. Currently, Chatten Associates is
working on several projects for the US Army to use robotics in
saving lives in Iraq in the fight against roadside bombs. About
eMagin Corporation A leader in OLED microdisplay technology and
personal display systems, eMagin integrates high-resolution OLED
