                    Notification of Major Interest in Shares


In accordance with the Companies Act 1985 (as amended) the Company was informed
today that on 7 January 2004 Standard Life Investments, on behalf of the
Standard Life Group, purchased 975,000 SkyePharma plc Ordinary Shares, thus
increasing their holding to 31,800,386 Ordinary Shares, representing 5.14% of
the issued share capital of the Company. These Ordinary Shares are registered in
the name of Stanlife Nominees Limited.
