Working Too Many Hours, Worrying About Work When Not on the Job Among Top Reasons RESTON, Va., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The majority of employees feel like they are spending more time in the office then at home according to a new survey by TrueCareers, the leading online job board for finding educated, diverse candidates quickly and easily. The survey of almost 600 employees has found that more than 60 percent of employees believe that they have a poor balance between their work and personal lives. TrueCareers found that 35 percent of employees believe that worrying about work when on the job has caused them to sacrifice a portion of their personal life. Twenty-five percent say that working too many hours has been the source of the interference. The survey also found that half of employees feel guilty when taking a day off from work or going on vacation. Fifty-four percent of employees did say that their employer encourages them to have a life outside of work although nearly 80 percent say that their company does not sponsor non-work related events such as intramural sports. And while employees feel that they are working too much, only 20 percent report they are looking for a new job due to a poor balance between their work and personal lives. "Employees are often pulled in different directions and asked to take on more while putting in longer hours," said Cecelia Dwyer, president, TrueCareers. "However, this work-first, play-later attitude is nothing new. Many of these employees may be responsible for their poor work-life balance, as more than half agree that their company's culture encourages them to have a life outside of work." The survey, conducted on http://www.truecareers.com/ during September 2005, is part of a monthly survey series for job candidates and employers on a variety of timely career-related topics.
