* 'In-Building' Mobile Solutions Improve Voice Quality and Simplify Installations for Enterprise Wireless Communications * Kansas State University Employees Count on Avaya Mobility to Conduct Business and Handle Student Needs While on the Go BASKING RIDGE, N.J., April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Avaya today announced new Internet protocol (IP)-based wireless devices for businesses that help highly mobile workers remain connected to colleagues and customers - and improve their productivity - as they roam within a work campus. The devices use the latest open standards-based communications technologies, and offer a range of models that serve the in-building wireless needs of all kinds of businesses. Avaya pioneered enterprise mobility with wireless devices and IP applications that enable businesses to benefit from Intelligent Communications in an 'always on' world. The new devices help organizations get the most out of their wireless local area network (WLAN), with enhancements that drive better voice quality, faster installations, and simplified access to telephony functions and innovative applications. Avaya's new introductions offer a choice of Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) and Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology (DECT) models, providing businesses with a cost-effective mobility solution that operates on any IP infrastructure. They are: Avaya 3641 and 3645 VoWLAN handsets: These rugged IP wireless devices are designed for busy settings and industrial environments, such as warehouses or hospitals, and feature protection from dust, water or random impact. They provide users with an Avaya wireless device that now supports the 802.11 'a' frequency (in addition to prior 'b' and 'g' support), which enhances voice quality through reduced wireless interference. These models also feature capabilities such as push to talk for instant communications, and can be easily enhanced by third-party applications, including messaging, nurse call systems, and alarm alerts. Avaya 3631 VoWLAN handset: Ideal for office settings, this new color display IP wireless handset is a sophisticated, yet low-cost solution for the roaming office worker that uses 802.11 b and g WLANs. It is designed to be easily installed on any WLAN network, allowing companies to quickly and cost- effectively deploy mobility to workers. Avaya 3711 IP Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology (DECT) Handset: DECT technology was recently ratified by the FCC for use in North America, after having provided highly-reliable wireless voice communications for enterprises in other global regions. Avaya now provides IP DECT as a voice-optimized option to WiFi, providing scalable and secure wireless voice communications using cordless technologies. Avaya DECT handsets are ideal for businesses that do not want to co-mingle voice and data on the same wireless network, while providing high-quality mobile voice communications. "The demand for on-campus wireless solutions is steadily increasing," said Nathan Dyer, senior analyst, enterprise mobility at Yankee Group. "Today's mobility market is focused on supporting the road warrior, even though one- third of mobile workers roam primarily in the office. Because voice remains the killer application for mobile employees, voice over wireless LAN and DECT solutions will resonate with companies supporting a large intra-office mobile workforce." Kansas State University Makes Mobility Easy with Avaya IP Solutions Avaya's wireless solutions serve mobile workers in many different industries, including the education market, as demonstrated by Avaya customer Kansas State University (KSU), a leading institution that offers undergraduate and advanced education opportunities. KSU required mobile voice communications that were simple to install and use, and allowed personnel to remain highly productive while traveling across a large campus of approximately 100 buildings. Avaya IP mobility solutions meet these needs, and make work easier for employees like Linda Grubbs, administrative assistant for the university's highly-regarded athletic department, who uses the new Avaya 3631 VoWLAN handset daily. "I often leave my desk to handle all different types of errands across campus," said Grubbs. "With my old wireless phone, there were too many steps to take to manage communications when I left my desk. Now, the 3631 makes it simpler to conference call, speed dial or manage multiple lines while I am roaming on campus. It makes my job so much easier." In addition to its in-building wireless capabilities, KSU's mobility solution goes far beyond campus walls with Avaya Extension to Cellular, a solution that enables mobile workers to receive on their cell phone incoming calls actually dialed to their desk phones. The athletic department, for example, often takes trips around the state and country to play games and recruit athletes, requiring a high degree of mobility as they travel. SKC, an Avaya Authorized BusinessPartner, guided KSU through its selection of Avaya Mobility Solutions, and provided expert support and counsel during beta testing of the solutions. "Businesses require their employees to be increasingly mobile - their success relies on it. This in turn drives the demand for devices that make individuals more productive, even while not at a desk," said Geoffrey Baird, Avaya's vice president and general manager, Appliances, Mobile and Small Systems Division. "Avaya's new wireless devices extend the company's strategy of delivering enhanced user experiences through Intelligent Communications, while enabling companies to reach a whole new level of mobility." The 3631, 3641 and 3645 VoWLAN wireless devices are now available globally. The Avaya 3711 IP DECT handset is currently available in Europe and the Middle East, and is scheduled for release in North America in May 2007.
