Saras SpA (SRS.MI), Italy's second-largest independent refinery by capacity, said Tuesday there was an accident at its Sardinia facility earlier in the day, although it was unable to say if there had been victims or if production was affected.

"There was an accident during maintenance and we can't confirms the report of three deaths," said a spokesman. He said the company was still waiting for details of the accident and would issue a statement later Tuesday.

Three workers of an external company carrying out maintenance work at the Sarroch facility died around 1200 GMT as a result of toxic gasses, writes the Web site of daily la Repubblica, without citing sources.
