Saras SpA (SRS.MI) Tuesday said three workers died as a consequence of an accident at its Sardinian refinery earlier in the day.

The three workers died at a unit of the refinery that was idle for scheduled maintenance activities, the company - Italy's second-largest independent refinery by capacity - said in a statement.

Saras said in an emailed statement that its chairman and chief executive GianMarco and Massimo Moratti are on their way to Sardinia to meet with the families of the three workers.

According to press reports the three workers of an external company carrying out maintenance work at the Sarroch facility died as a result of toxic gases.

Shares of Saras Tuesday closed -2.5% at EUR2.12 in an overall higher market.
