EU Clears UK's Carphone Warehouse To Buy ISP Tiscali UK

The European Commission Tuesday cleared U.K. mobile phone
operator The Carphone Warehouse Group PLC's (CPW.LN) TalkTalk Group
Ltd. to buy Internet service provider Tiscali U.K. Ltd.
Tiscali U.K. was previously owned by Italian parent Tiscali SpA
(TIS.MI).
Currently, Tiscali U.K. is Britain's fifth-largest internet
access service. The integration of Tiscali U.K. and TalkTalk's
networks will make TalkTalk the U.K.'s largest residential
broadband provider and second-largest overall broadband provider,
with 4.25 million subscribers.
The commission concluded that it could allow the deal as the new
entity will face competition from a number of strong players
"especially BT," as well as from alternative providers such as
cable operators.
