Big Data Ethics Methodology will Help Companies Assess Ethical Issues Related to the Use of Data in Marketing and Advertising

Acxiom® (NASDAQ: ACXM), an enterprise data, analytics and software-as-a-service company, today announced that it has awarded a research grant to The Information Accountability Foundation (IAF) to expand its work on the Ethical Big Data Framework to the marketing and advertising industry.

The Foundation is currently in phase one of a “Big Data” ethics project, which entails the creation of a unified ethical framework with questions devised to evaluate projects to ensure they are ethical. Acxiom’s grant – consisting of $50,000 for research and development – will allow the Foundation to extend its project to the marketing and advertising industry once the current phase is completed in October 2014.

“Big Data ethics are fundamental to data-driven marketing,” said Acxiom CEO Scott Howe. “We are long-time supporters of the ethical use of data and have been extremely vocal about the responsibility that we all have in ensuring that data is used in a responsible manner.”

Scott Taylor, HP Chief Privacy Officer and member of the Foundation's Board of Directors, said, “This is the first commitment to build the Foundation's vision into business tools, and the Foundation is looking forward to the challenge.”

“There is an imperative need for new tools,” said IAF Executive Director Marty Abrams. “Innovative privacy assessments of business practices must take into consideration all human interests and rights in addition to those of society and business.”

Abrams will work with Acxiom to create a discussion draft that will be shared with members of the advertising and marketing and civil society to incorporate their thoughts as a way to ensure that the tools are workable and meaningful to all users. The completion of the project is estimated to occur in the first quarter of 2015.

Acxiom’s grant for this research represents another contribution to the industry at a time when government, business, regulators and advocates concur that Big Data and the internet of things have begun to stress traditional approaches to privacy and data protection.
