Mr. Bob Fasso, Central Freight Lines, Inc. (Nasdaq:CENF) President
and CEO, announced today that Mr. Larry Springer has received top
safety honors from both the American Trucking Associations (ATA)
and the Texas Motor Transportation Association (TMTA). This
announcement follows Central's recent receipt of the highest safety
honor in the trucking industry, the prestigious ATA 2004
President's Trophy in the Mid-size Fleet category. Each year one
driver across all companies in America is named ATA National Driver
of the Year. Springer, a line-haul driver in Central's Austin, TX
terminal, is the ATA's 2005 National Driver of the Year. An
impartial panel of judges from the trucking industry, government
and law enforcement chose Mr. Springer for this distinguished honor
based on his safe driving record, history of demonstrating safety
leadership and his other efforts throughout the years to improve
safety on America's highways. The ATA will honor Mr. Springer for
his accomplishments in October, first at the ATA Safety and Loss
Prevention Management Council's Safety & Human Resources
National Conference in Miami and again in Boston at the ATA
Management Conference & Exhibition. "I am incredibly proud of
Mr. Springer's accomplishments, his impeccable driving record and
his dedication to Central Freight Lines," said Mr. Fasso. "Central
fosters the most rigorous safety initiatives in our industry and
Mr. Springer's achievements epitomize the successes resulting from
those initiatives." Mr. Springer also received accolades from the
TMTA's Safety Management Council. In May he was named the 2005
Texas State Driver of the Year. "During the review of this year's
nominations for Texas Driver of the Year, it was apparent that Mr.
Springer's professionalism and accomplishments were at an extremely
high level," said Mr. Bill Webb, President of Texas Motor
Transportation Association. "The vote for Mr. Springer was
unanimous. A unanimous vote for a TMTA Driver of the Year has not
occurred in a number of years." While recounting his long career at
Central, Mr. Springer said that Central taught him the right way to
drive and that he still, to this day, uses many of the things he
learned when he first joined the company. "The Safety Department,
and in particular Mr. Gary Thomas, have given me the tools and the
knowledge to safely drive four million miles," said Mr. Springer.
"I could not have done it without Central's help and it's a
pleasure to work for a company that puts safety first." In May
2005, Mr. Springer surpassed 4 million consecutive accident free
miles during his 32-year career as a driver. Having driven 30 of
those years for Central, the company honored Mr. Springer's
outstanding accomplishments with its Presidential Citation Award
for 30 continuous years of professional driving without involvement
in a vehicular accident. "Mr. Springer represents the culture of
best-in-class service and safety we provide to our customers,"
commented Mr. Gary Thomas, Vice President of Safety. "Truck drivers
deliver nearly 70 percent of the nation's freight and Central
drivers, like Mr. Springer, have set a gold standard in the safety
category." Through the years, Central has called upon Mr. Springer
to represent the company in issues of driver safety. He currently
serves as one of Central's Driver Instructors, training and testing
Central drivers in all aspects of driver safety. In 1994 - 1995 he
served as a member of the ATA America's Road Team, where he
traveled extensively and made television and radio appearances to
promote road safety to the general public. To advance safe driving
techniques and public education, Mr. Springer has also appeared in
PBS programming, on local and international television and in
documentaries. Mr. Springer and Marilyn, his wife of 42 years,
reside in Holland, Texas, and have one son, Larry Springer, Jr.
Prior to joining Central, Mr. Springer, as a U.S. Marine, served
two tours of combat duty in Vietnam (1962 - 1966) and was honorably
discharged as an E5 Sergeant. From 1966 to 1974, he served as a
police officer in Temple, TX and as a Deputy Sheriff in Bell
County, TX. About: (www.Centralfreight.com) Central Freight Lines,
