The European Union Friday cleared the proposed acquisition of laboratory-equipment maker Dionex Corp. (DNEX) by Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (TMO).

Thermo Fisher produces analytical instruments, scientific equipment and research software.

"The commission examined the competitive effects of the proposed acquisition in the areas of chromatography, high pressure liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, consumables, related software and distribution," the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said in a statement. "The examination showed that the combination of Thermo Fisher's and Dionex's activities will not lead to competition concerns in any of the relevant markets."
