Rep. Yvette Clarke (D., N.Y.) raised another concern that has
been lurking for the social-media platforms -- their systems'
ability to help advertisers target online audiences in ways that
might unfairly discriminate against minorities and others.
One concern has been the targeting of housing ads in ways that
discriminate against minorities.
She's pushing legislation to address the issue, which persists
despite efforts by the companies to restrict their advertisers'
ability to target unfairly.
"The longer we delay in this, the more the systems that you have
created bake discrimination into the algorithms," she said. She
said it's critical the companies do more to "undo a lot of the harm
that has been created with the bias that has been baked into your
systems."
