Kettering Upgrades to Next-Generation IDX Carecast(TM) Long-time LastWord(R) customer will use Carecast to enhance integration, patient safety and billing efficiency DAYTON, Ohio and BURLINGTON, Vt., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Kettering Medical Center Network (KMCN), a long-time IDX LastWord(R) user, announced it will upgrade to the next-generation IDX Carecast(TM) enterprise system from IDX Systems Corporation . The agreement was signed in the third quarter of 2003. KMCN will use Carecast to support its ongoing development of lifetime electronic patient records by completely integrating patients' clinical, financial and administrative data throughout its four hospitals, multiple health centers and 40 satellite facilities. KMCN also plans to pursue enhanced documentation capabilities for nurses and physicians, as well as computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and wireless barcode medication administration with Carecast. "With LastWord, we've realized the benefits of integrating all patient data, including clinical and financial information, onto one platform -- a seamless way to deliver the highest quality medical care," said Nyle Morgan, CIO of KMCN. "Now, with the expanded functionality that Carecast offers, we will close the loop on patient safety, while maintaining the system wide efficiencies and cost-effectiveness that come with integration." Carecast will further streamline processes for KMCN clinicians through enhanced care documentation capabilities and online charting, which promote communication between all members of the care team and help reduce time spent on administrative functions. CPOE, with its decision-support functionality and ability to eliminate mistakes caused by unintelligible handwritten orders, will provide even greater support for patient safety goals. In addition, wireless barcode medication administration can make a significant impact on error reduction by allowing physicians, nurses and pharmacists to confirm the "five rights" of medication administration. KMCN, which serves 43 percent of patients in the Dayton, Ohio, area, will implement Carecast across its organization, including the Grandview Medical Center. KMCN needed a system that works with a wide range of facilities -- from large, nationally renowned hospitals to small community satellites. Carecast runs on the highly scalable HP NonStop(TM) platform, which delivers subsecond access to information across the enterprise and 99.9 percent uptime. "It has been exceptional to work with KMCN, a nationally recognized leader in a host of medical fields," said Mike Raymer, Senior Vice President and General Manager, IDX Carecast Division. "We look forward to the ongoing opportunity to provide the IT tools to help KMCN meet its expanded patient safety goals and advance fail-safe care." About KMCN Eugene and Virginia Kettering founded Kettering Memorial Hospital in 1964 to honor the memory of Eugene's father, Charles F. Kettering. Since that time, the not-for-profit organization has rapidly grown to cover a nine-county region and today is known as the Kettering Medical Center Network (KMCN). KMCN serves the Dayton area and its surrounding communities, with nearly 1,000 physicians, 6,000 staff members and more than 800 volunteers. What makes the Kettering Medical Center Network unique among health care providers is that it is a faith-based, mission-driven organization. The Kettering Medical Center Network has over 40 facilities including Kettering Memorial Hospital, Grandview Hospital, Sycamore Hospital, Southview Hospital and Kettering Youth Services.
