Business Wire
Symmetricom, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYMM), a worldwide leader in precise
time and frequency technologies that accelerate the deployment and
enable the management of next generation networks, today announced
that the company now offers one of the most comprehensive IEEE
1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) client portfolios with three
PTP client options the TimeProvider 500 Translator, the PTP
Client Module and the PTP Soft Client enabling network equipment
manufacturers and service providers to seamlessly migrate existing
TDM-based backhaul networks to far more cost-effective Ethernet
backhaul. The company announced its TimeProvider 500 PTP Translator
in June 2008. The new PTP Client Module and new PTP Soft Client
round out one of the most comprehensive IEEE 1588v2 PTP client
portfolios in the industry. The groundbreaking release of the PTP
IEEE 1588 v2 standard has the interest of network vendors and
operators planning migration to IP/Ethernet backhaul, stated
Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder at Infonetics
Research. With PTP 1588 v2, operators are now in a position to
trust IP/Ethernet to be the single backhaul network to carry both
2G/3G voice and IP/Ethernet packet traffic instead of using the
hybrid, 2-network approach. Symmetricoms PTP client products have
upgrade options that allow mobile operators and backhaul transport
providers to deploy Ethernet backhaul to support next generation
servicesnow and in the future. With IEEE 1588v2 PTP, different
end-devices in an Ethernet network can be synchronized, allowing
operators to distribute precise timing and frequency throughout the
network to ensure the stringent quality levels required for next
generation applications and services. By providing a flexible,
step-by-step migration path to implement IEEE 1588 PTP,
Symmetricoms PTP Client Portfolio will enable the accelerated
deployment of next generation Ethernet backhaul networks worldwide.
Symmetricom offers three PTP client options, giving carriers and
network equipment manufacturers the utmost flexibility when
implementing IEEE 1588 PTP for timing and synchronization in the
IP-based NGN network: The TimeProvider 500 Translator For
carriers, this external client in a box solution offers a
cost-effective, immediate migration path to Ethernet backhaul with
IEEE 1588 PTP. The Client Module For network equipment
manufacturers, the board implementation allows rapid integration
into base transceiver stations where network vendors can plug and
play the IEEE 1588 PTP technology into existing equipment,
eliminating entire system upgrades and reducing risk. The Soft
Client Also for network equipment manufacturers the embedded
client offers a very low cost and flexible option since network
design engineers can integrate the software-based client into their
own designs. Symmetricom has consistently demonstrated
technological expertise and leadership in the area of network
timing and IEEE 1588 server and client technology. Two
synchronization and timing experts from Symmetricom, George
Zampetti and Greg Dowd, recently co-authored the paper
Characterizing Network Synchronization Potential with the MinTDEV
Statistic. Their creation of the MinTDEV technology is a
fundamental breakthrough allowing the industry to move forward in
deploying PTP in real packet networks. Recently accepted by the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU), it is now included as
part of the ITU.G.8261 industry specification. In order to
increase revenue in the fiercely competitive wireless space,
carriers understand it is critical to offer next generation
services, but with these services comes the challenge of expanding
the network to cost-effectively support new bandwidth
requirements, commented Kevin Hsu, vice president of product
marketing at Symmetricom. Symmetricoms leadership and
technological expertise in the area of network timing with the IEEE
1588 PTP standard and our ability to adapt to various deployment
scenarios are evident in our PTP Client Portfolio, delivering the
critical timing and synchronization that allows for the rapid
migration to the packet-based network. Symmetricom provides a
total, end-to-end IEEE 1588 PTP solution. On the server side,
Symmetricoms TimeProvider 5000 IEEE 1588 v2 carrier-class
grandmaster clock, announced earlier this year, provides the
highest level of timing and frequency for wireline and wireless
applications. Symmetricom has received positive feedback from
various customers who have either completed their initial PTP field
trials or are close to completion. Availability The TimeProvider
500 Translator is actively engaged in lab trials with numerous
network service providers and is shipping in limited quantities.
The PTP Client Module and PTP Soft Client are scheduled to ship in
early 2009. The TimeProvider 5000 IEEE 1588 v2 carrier-class
grandmaster clock is expected to ship by the end of 2008. About
