Symmetricom®, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYMM), a worldwide leader in precision time and frequency technologies, announced it is taking on a key role in the newly formed IEEE 1588 Conformity Alliance Program (ICAP). ICAP is a joint venture between IEEE and IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO). Tim Frost, principal technologist for Symmetricom, has officially joined the Alliance’s Board of Directors, and Committee of Experts.

The ICAP Committee of Experts also includes distinguished representatives from France Telecom, China Mobile, LSI Chronos Technology, RAD, Cisco, Tellabs, Brilliant Telecom, Zarlink, MEF, Iometrix, Broadcom, Huawei, Calnex, NSN, ALU, Oscilloquartz, Semtech, Comcast and Anue.

“The volume of traffic traveling over networks continues to increase exponentially and users aren’t willing to deal with backhaul limitations. One of the most essential ingredients to successful packet-based synchronization is to have very precise timing and synchronization solutions in each and every network infrastructure,” said Tim Frost, principal technologist at Symmetricom. “Symmetricom welcomes the opportunity to be a part of the IEEE 1588 Conformity Alliance and work with its core team of influential network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) and service providers to accelerate the adoption and deployment of IEEE 1588 technology and ITU-T PTP (Precision Time Protocol) worldwide.”

The initial charter of the Committee of Experts will be the review and approval of the IEEE 1588 Certification Test Suite for telecom, to be followed by the development of a formal IEEE 1588 certification program and test lab to be launched in early 2011.

About Tim Frost

Frost, principal technologist on Symmetricom’s Advanced Development Team, is charged with working on synchronization solutions for next-generation networks. He has presented extensively on the subject at conferences such as ITSF and WSTS. He is an active contributor to standards activities in synchronization and, in particular, in his current role as editor of the draft Telecommunication Standard Sector (ITU-T) recommendation G.8260 on definitions and metrics for packet-based synchronization.

Prior to Symmetricom, Frost was a System Architect with Zarlink Semiconductor for seven years, where he worked on their Convergence product line, dealing with carrying Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) circuits over packet networks, and in particular on the synchronization aspects of carrying real-time information over packet networks. During this time, he was the editor for the MEF’s standards on Circuit Emulation Services (MEF3, 8 and 18). In previous roles, Frost also worked in areas as diverse as the design of embedded CPU cores for ASIC devices, and telephony systems for railway signaling. Frost also had several roles at Mitel Semiconductor. Frost has a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds, and an MSc. in Computation from the University of Manchester. He is a Member of the IET and a Chartered Engineer.

About IEEE 1588 Conformity Alliance

IEEE 1588 Conformity Alliance was established to advocate the Precision Timing Protocol and to focus on certifying implementations to assure conformance to IEEE 1588™ "Standard for a Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems." IEEE 1588 Conformity Alliance is managed by the IEEE Conformity Assessment Program (ICAP), a joint venture between IEEE and IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO).

Founding Board Members of the IEEE 1588 Conformity Alliance include Alcatel-Lucent, Anue Systems, Brilliant Telecommunications, Calnex Solutions, Huawei Technologies, Iometrix, and Symmetricom. Additional Founding Members include Accedian Networks, Chronos Technology, and Ericsson. The group is currently developing a test program that will serve as the foundation of its conformance and certification activities.
