SAN JOSE, Calif., June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/
-- Symmetricom®, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYMM), a worldwide leader
in precision time and frequency technologies, today announced that
it has deployed its PackeTime® Systems providing IEEE 1588v2
Precision Time Protocol (PTP) in more than 150 networks worldwide.
This milestone demonstrates strong momentum for IEEE 1588 as the
standard for distributing synchronization for operators and
carriers over Ethernet network infrastructures. Symmetricom has
supported 50+ deployments in 2012 since it had announced the 100
deployment mark in October 2011.

IEEE 1588 is a synchronization protocol developed for IP-based
networks that delivers both frequency and phase synchronization,
and is being deployed to support carriers worldwide transitioning
their networks to Ethernet backhaul. According to Heavy
Reading's Ethernet Backhaul Quarterly Tracker Service published
March 2012, IEEE 1588 is expected
to be the primary synchronization solution in over 1 million
Ethernet cell sites by 2015. Symmetricom is working with
key industry players such as Nokia Siemens Networks, an early
adopter of IEEE 1588, to deploy and develop PTP technologies. Nokia
Siemens Networks has already deployed the standard in more than 80
networks.
"Rollouts of IEEE 1588 have definitely picked up as more
carriers move to Ethernet backhaul," said Giuseppe Targia, head of MBB Packet Networks
product management, Nokia Siemens Networks. "Precise timing and
synchronization within the network are critical to operations, and
our partnership with Symmetricom has enabled a reliable migration
to packet based infrastructure."
To further support the adoption of IEEE 1588 and next generation
networks, Symmetricom's SyncWorld® Ecosystem Program is enabling
interoperability and cooperation among members of the mobile
ecosystem to ensure seamless integration to service provider
networks. Nokia Siemens Networks was a founding member of the
SyncWorld Ecosystem Program launched in March 2011.
"IEEE 1588 is becoming a key synchronization standard as
networks transition from TDM to packet-based to support 4G/LTE
network requirements," said Manish
Gupta, vice president of marketing and business development
for Symmetricom. "We see this trend continuing and we look forward
to supporting the transition with a comprehensive portfolio of IEEE
1588 solutions."
