Tesla faces another potential recall after Norway's
traffic-safety regulator launched an inquiry into suspension
failures, the latest blow to hit the EV maker after it recalled 2
million vehicles earlier this month over problems with its
driver-assistance system.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration said it opened an
investigation into Tesla's Model S and X vehicles following
messages from some owners in the country.
The agency said Thursday that it has been in contact with Tesla
Norway for more information, adding that the probe has been going
on for some time. The case is still under consideration while it
awaits a response, it said.
Tesla didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Earlier this month, the car maker said it was recalling more
than 2 million vehicles over government contentions that its
Autopilot system could be misused by drivers, amid a yearslong
probe by the top U.S. auto-safety regulator into crashes involving
the driver-assistance technology.
The safety recall covers Tesla Models 3, S, X and Y produced
between late 2012 and through Dec. 7, 2023, that are equipped with
the company's automatic steering function.
Tesla said at the time that it plans to remotely deploy a free
software remedy that will add more alerts and controls encouraging
drivers to remain attentive while using Autopilot to steer within a
lane, according to the recall report.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been
scrutinizing Tesla's system after years of high-profile crashes and
questions about whether the company was promising more than it
could deliver.
Tesla tells drivers using Autopilot to pay attention to the road
and to keep their hands on the wheel, but the company's public
messaging has sometimes appeared inconsistent with that
guidance.
Drivers have at times overridden the safety functions to operate
the vehicle without their hands on the wheel.
