Overseas markets started the week pointed higher, thanks in part to
Germany's political situation. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has
called for early national elections, a positive move as some see
this as an end to a year of uncertainty over the future of reforms.
What's more, this could signal a new, more reform-based government
in Germany. It is believed that Schroeder will lose the election.
Morgan Stanley told its clients that this could be good news for
Germany's economic growth and for further structural reforms. On
the news, the German DAX 30 increased by one percent, closing at
4,404. The French CAC 40 index also increased, moving ahead 0.4
percent to finish at 4,096. In London, the FTSE 100 index marked a
0.1-percent increase to 4,978. In Asia, the indexes showed a mixed
start to the week. Japanese indexes posted solid gains; however,
data and trade tensions have added pressure to Chinese shares. The
Nikkei 225 Average gained 1.1 percent to close at 11,158.65.
China's Shanghai Composite index was the largest loser in the
region, dropping 2.6 percent. The Chinese government released
statistics showing that the combined profits of China's industrial
firms increased by 15.6 percent. Hong Kong's Hang Seng started the
day higher, but dropped in late afternoon trading. Currently 12 of
the 15 indexes we track have been able to trek into positive
territory. Be prepared for the investing week ahead with Bernie

MARKET OPPORTUNITIES According to the International Monetary Fund,
the latest forecast for global growth this year is 4.3%. In noting
that oil prices haven't placed any additional pressure on the
global economy by rising any further, the IMF nevertheless stated
that the high US deficits remain a big problem. Moreover, the
current relief within the oil market isn't likely to last much
longer, as the OPEC oil cartel is primed to send oil back above
US$50 in the near future. Last Thursday, OPEC's president stated
that if oil reserves swell excessively, the cartel will cut
production -- possibly as soon as its next meeting on June 15. In
terms of market action, it was little surprise that, after a solid
week of trading, stocks paused for breath last Friday. But the
overall sense that the Federal Reserve has inflation under control,
coupled with lower oil prices, still led to a relatively upbeat
mood. One company enjoying an outstanding day was Maytag. Shares of
the appliance manufacturer soared over 24%, following news that
Ripplewood Holdings will pay US$1.1 billion for the troubled
company. Elsewhere, shares of Rent-Way is drawing some attention of
its own, thanks to Business Week. According to the report, a money
manager believes that "with sales, earnings, and margins higher,
Rent-Way may now be a target of bigger rival Aaron Rents."
Currently trading at about US$8, a buyout deal could fetch up to
US$13. In Mexico, the Finance Ministry reported that, having
recorded an impressive 4.9% GDP growth rate during the fourth
quarter, first quarter growth cooled to a 2.4% annual pace. A
slowdown in the manufacturing sector and less demand from the US
was blamed for the bulk of the decline. Industrial production
slumped 4.7% in March alone. However, reports suggest the economy
has rebounded, with second quarter economic activity putting growth
back in line with forecasts that call for 4% expansion this year.
