Lilly Announces Winners in Global Awards for Outstanding Achievements in Diabetes Care INDIANAPOLIS, June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Building on its longtime leadership and commitment to improving diabetes care, Eli Lilly and Company today announced six worldwide winners of the 2005 Lilly Partnership in Diabetes Global Awards. The winners include a teenage symphony conductor with diabetes; the founders of humanitarian organizations that aid people with diabetes; two nurses who run diabetes camps; and a retired pediatrician who remains devoted to the care of children with diabetes. The Lilly Partnership in Diabetes Global Awards honor outstanding and inspirational achievement by people with diabetes or those who have contributed to improving the lives of others with diabetes. Nominees were judged by leading international diabetes care advocates in five categories: People with Diabetes, Contribution to Care in the Community, Primary and Secondary Care Professional, Diabetes Specialist Nurse, and Service to a National Patient Association. The winners will be honored at a recognition luncheon on 12 June, at the 65th Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego, Calif., USA. The 2005 winners: * Leonard Ganvert of Paris, France, was named the winner in the People with Diabetes category of the awards. Living with diabetes for nearly five years, Ganvert founded his own symphony orchestra in France at age 18 and regularly plays benefit concerts for children with diabetes. * Ron Raab of Victoria, Australia, was named the winner in the Contribution to Care in the Community category. Raab, who has lived with type 1 diabetes for 47 years, founded Insulin for Life, a humanitarian diabetes aid organization in Australia that provides insulin, needles, syringes, glucometers and testing strips to developing nations. * Dr. Maria Nelida Blando of Cordoba, Argentina, is the winner in the Primary and Secondary Care Professionals category. Blando is a retired pediatrician in Argentina and is still devoted to caring for children and teenagers with diabetes. * Julie Pearson and Christine Sheehan of Queensland, Australia, were named co-winners in the Diabetes Specialist Nurse category. Together, Pearson and Sheehan conduct six children's diabetes camps in Australia each year. * Elba Cristina Flores, of Cordoba, Argentina, was the winner in the Service to a National Patient Association category. Flores founded the Diabetic Foundation, which opened the first diabetic soup kitchen in Argentina and provides clinical care to 1,600 diabetes patients, mostly for free. "This year's Global Diabetes Awards winners are shining examples of the impact that even one person can make to improve care for people with diabetes -- or inspire people with diabetes to achieve extraordinary accomplishments," said Prof. Pierre Lefebvre, President of the International Diabetes Federation and chair of this year's international judging committee for the Global Awards. "Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating and sometimes fatal condition that impacts more than 194 million people worldwide. We need people like these six individuals to continue to motivate all of us in our battle against diabetes, and we hope that the Lilly Partnership in Diabetes Global Awards will increase awareness of the importance of appropriate management of diabetes, which can reduce the risk of complications." "Lilly has been the worldwide leader in diabetes care for more than 80 years," said Dr. Kathleen L. Wishner, director of Global Advocacy and Professional Relations for Eli Lilly and Company. "The Lilly Partnership in Diabetes Global Awards demonstrate Lilly's long-standing commitment to the improvement of diabetes education and care across the world, and provide an opportunity to recognize the good work of people in individual communities. The stories of these winners should serve as inspiration to us all as we strive to improve the care of people with diabetes."
