D.C.'s Historic Union Station WASHINGTON, Sept. 27
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eli Lilly and Company announced today a
call for entries for the 2006 Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions
of a Cancer Journey International Art Competition and Exhibition.
The competition invites people diagnosed with cancer, their
families and friends, cancer advocates, healthcare providers,
artists and art students to express, through art and in narrative,
their own cancer journeys. The announcement was made at a reception
at Union Station in Washington, D.C., where more than 150 works of
art from the 2004 competition are currently on display at the West
Hall through October 16, 2005. Featured speakers at the event
included ABC News Commentator and NPR Analyst Cokie Roberts; Fox
News Anchor Lark McCarthy; National Coalition for Cancer
Survivorship (NCCS) President and CEO Ellen Stovall; and Eli Lilly
and Company Vice President, Cancer Research and Global Oncology
Platform Leader Richard Gaynor. A European announcement around the
2006 international contest will be made next month during the
European Cancer Conference (ECCO) in Paris, France. NCCS President
and CEO Ellen Stovall said, "Lilly Oncology on Canvas brings us all
closer to the heart of the cancer journey, enabling us to walk the
path of emotions that cancer survivors or those who care for them
experience, and find hope in their inspirational artworks."
Stovall, who is also a two-time, 33-year cancer survivor added, "We
at NCCS believe that one is a cancer survivor from the moment of
diagnosis and for the balance of life. Because Lilly Oncology on
Canvas is about survivorship -- the experience of living with,
through and beyond a cancer diagnosis -- NCCS is proud to be
associated with this program." "People affected by cancer
experience a range of complex emotions which are often difficult to
express. Lilly Oncology on Canvas helps to give these emotions a
voice, one that has resonance and meaning," said Richard Gaynor,
M.D., vice president, cancer research and global oncology platform
for Eli Lilly and Company. "Lilly is committed to treating the
whole person as well as the disease by developing treatments that
offer real hope as well as programs that go beyond traditional drug
development to assist in the everyday struggles and successes
patients, physicians and caregivers face," Gaynor said. Background
