'Oncology on Canvas' International Art Competition Kicks Off with a
Call for Entries INDIANAPOLIS, May 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Entries are now being accepted for Oncology on Canvas: Expressions
of a Woman's Cancer Journey, an international art competition with
an exhibition slated for public viewing on December 3, 2004 at the
Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. Presented by Lilly Oncology,
the contest encourages breast cancer survivors, their oncologists,
nurses, families and friends to submit artwork that represents
their experiences with cancer. Entries from both men and women are
welcome and should portray a woman's cancer journey in ways that
inspire others. As part of the international competition, there
will also be a U.S. Region art competition and the U.S. regional
winner will be announced at the 27th Annual 2004 San Antonio Breast
Cancer Symposium held in San Antonio, Texas from December 8 to 11.
Entries from U.S. contestants will automatically be considered for
the international competition. "Lilly Oncology is pleased to
present Oncology on Canvas because it brings to life our commitment
to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients," said Paolo
Paoletti, M.D., vice president of oncology clinical research at
Lilly. "Unfortunately, many people have been touched by breast
cancer, whether it's a person's mother, daughter, wife, sister or
friend. This program allows us to experience and celebrate the
strength of everyone involved in a woman's cancer journey."
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer
will be diagnosed in more than one million women worldwide in 2004
and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women(1). It is
estimated in the United States that approximately 40,000 women die
each year from breast cancer(2). All entries should be submitted by
October 29, 2004 and will be centrally collected and cataloged by
the contest's art secretariat. Media accepted include oils,
watercolors, acrylics, photographs, pastels and charcoal. A "Best
of Exhibition" winner and two "runners-up" will be selected from
all international entries. Also chosen will be "Best of Category"
winners and one "People's Choice" selection. Each winner will have
a sum of money donated to the cancer charity of the winner's choice
in his or her name. Winners will be notified in November 2004. The
"Best of Exhibition" winner will be flown to London to receive his
or her prize at a special Oncology on Canvas Art Exhibition Banquet
on December 2, 2004. Competition is subject to applicable laws and
regulations, which may vary per country. "Significant strides in
oncology research and development continue to provide patients with
treatment success and hope for the future. Oncology on Canvas
complements treatment advances by presenting the opportunity for
those affected by breast cancer, their family and friends to
express visually their deepest emotions about their experience,
from diagnosis to treatment and how each day they cope with their
hopes, fears and dreams," said Professor Ian Smith, Professor of
Cancer Medicine at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of
Cancer Research. A representative from the RCA will join Professor
Smith, as well as a patient-advocacy representative, artist,
journalist, patient and the director of the art competition as
panel members selected to judge all art entries. Lilly welcomes the
support offered by Vital Options(R) International -- a global
cancer communication, support, and advocacy organization. "The
creative process plays a unique role in healing and coping. Art is
a universal language that allows one to reveal aspects of
themselves, by bringing meaning and expression to the cancer
experience in ways that spoken words often cannot," said Selma
Schimmel, founder and CEO of Vital Options International and a
survivor of breast cancer. For more information on the Oncology on
