Eli Lilly and Company Opens Nominations For 8th Annual Awards for
Mental Health Initiatives Helping Move Lives Forward Reintegration
Awards Recognize Professional and Individual Achievements
INDIANAPOLIS, June 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eli Lilly and
Company announced a call for entries for its prestigious Helping
Move Lives Forward Reintegration Awards program at the annual
meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. This is the second
year that the Awards program will distinguish not only outstanding
achievements made by a mental health treatment team, but will also
honor individuals who are succeeding in their personal battles with
psychiatric illness. "The Helping Move Lives Forward Reintegration
Awards is Lilly's way of recognizing the importance of treatment
team collaboration and individual accomplishments toward the
ultimate goal of reintegration. With the expanded scope of the
awards, we're truly acknowledging the role that people with mental
illness can play in helping themselves and others realize their own
potential," said Gino Santini, President of U.S. Operations, Eli
Lilly and Company. Individuals may be nominated for Artistic
Contribution, Mentorship and Inspiration awards. Nomination
categories for the entire treatment team continue to recognize the
critical role that caregivers, social workers, advocates, policy
makers as well as nurses and clinicians play in helping move their
patients' lives forward. Among the seven awards honoring treatment
team success is a category added last year, Lifetime Achievement,
recognizing a healthcare professional who has made remarkable
contributions to many lives over the course of his or her career.
"Expanding the awards to people living with mental illness has been
rewarding and inspiring not only for the winners, but for the
mental health community as a whole. Last year, we received nearly
400 nominations for individual awards. More importantly, we learned
about many diverse ways people with a mental illness are succeeding
at moving their own and other people's lives forward," said Ralph
Aquila, M.D., director of residential community services at St.
Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York and Awards
chairperson. Several individuals with mental illness were honored
at last year's awards including documentary filmmaker John Cadigan,
Margaret "Peggy" Aho who serves as a mentor for others with mental
illness, and advocate and activist Cherie Bledsoe. In addition,
former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy
of Rhode Island, and Lizzie Simon, author of "Detour: My Bipolar
Road Trip in 4-D," received honorary awards for their outstanding
efforts to raise awareness of psychiatric disorders and mental
health issues on a national level. The Awards program will champion
the collaborative roles of consumer involvement, treatment team
support and access to effective medication in helping patients
attain the four goals of successful reintegration: a comfortable
place to live, a job, positive relationships with friends and
family and medical care provided by a comprehensive treatment team.
The public is invited to nominate individuals, caregivers,
treatment groups, treatment programs and advocates for one of 10
Lilly Helping Move Lives Forward Reintegration Awards. The three
awards for people living with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder *
The Artistic Contribution Award honors individual accomplishment in
self-expression, in areas such as painting, video, dance
performance, music or design and fashion. * The Mentorship Award
recognizes individuals who have risen above their own personal
challenges to lend a hand to a friend in need. * The Inspiration
Award honors individuals whose improvements over time have allowed
for important personal achievements. The seven treatment team
awards * The Clinical Medicine Award honors those who combine
effective protocols and compassionate strategies to achieve success
in clinical outcomes. * On the Job Award recognizes those who help
individuals in their care develop the skills needed to find a
meaningful job and the determination to keep it. * Home Sweet Home
Award celebrates the accomplishment of helping someone make a home.
* Advocacy Award honors those who demonstrate their dedication by
speaking up for people living with schizophrenia and bipolar
disorder. * Keep Learning Award pays tribute to those who help
people living with a psychiatric disorder achieve their educational
goals. * Social Support Award recognizes the exceptional dedication
of those who help individuals in their care adopt the basic social
and coping skills required for community interaction. * Lifetime
Achievement Award honors the healthcare professional who has made
remarkable contributions to many lives over the course of time. In
addition, three honorary categories will recognize individuals who
have worked to raise awareness of schizophrenia and related
disorders, and/or bipolar disorder, on a local and national level
in the past year. There will be one recipient per category, which
includes Government, Media and The Public Eye. An independent panel
of individuals and healthcare professionals chaired by Aquila will
evaluate the nominations. The evaluations will be based upon how
well the nominee has satisfied each particular award category
including criteria considered essential to treatment success:
individual involvement in the implementation of one's own treatment
program, dedication of the entire treatment team, measurable
results and tangible evidence that everyday life has moved forward.
Winners in each of the 10 categories will receive grants to their
respective institutions to further the success of their programs.
First place winners will receive $5,000 and second place winners
will receive $2,500. For those recognized in the three honorary
categories, a contribution of $5,000 will be made to the mental
health facility or advocacy program of their choice. The award
winners will be announced this fall at a dinner honoring the
recipients. To receive an application call 800-809-8202, e-mail a
