Julich Research Center Researches Wide Range of Issues With Help of Trapeze Wireless Networking PLEASANTON, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- With 4,400 employees, Julich is one of Europe's largest research centers. Julich recently selected the Trapeze NonStop Wireless Networking as its WLAN platform for its optimal reliability and security because the center is responsible for the most important research projects in Germany and all of Europe. Trapeze Networks is a Belden brand (NYSE:BDC). In the first phase of the project, Julich's NonStop Wireless Networking infrastructure consists of 400 centrally-managed access points. Using Trapeze Networks' SmartPass software, the network allows easy - and secure - guest access for visiting scientists and students. The wireless network was installed by Cologne-based systems integrator Telonic. "Our main reason for choosing Trapeze Networks was its reputation for being a manageable solution," says Telonic key account manager Norbert May. The network is managed by Trapeze Networks' RingMaster network planning software and incorporated Julich's CAD plans and other building planning documentation to design the optimal network configuration. Despite the large size of the Julich campus - 2.2 square kilometers in all - students can go online from even the most remote corners of the campus. Before people can access the Wi-Fi network, they are required to register using a custom tool developed at Julich. Once a user has registered, access permissions are granted that make it possible to log on to different data networks. Some networks are reserved for Julich staff members whereas guests are only allowed to access the Internet. "It's a very simple and comfortable system to work with," says Julich IT project manager Markus Meier. "Trapeze's RingMaster network management application enables us to precisely track our users and determine their exact bandwidth requirements, and this in turn simplifies the task of determining how many access points and how much bandwidth we need." The Trapeze solution also integrates Mobility Exchange Controllers that encrypt data and manage RF security. The first phase of the network implementation has gone so well that Julich is scheduled for WLAN expansion. "The network is set to grow each year. This year alone we will be installing between 40 and 50 additional access points," says Meier.
