Brookfield Canada Office Properties (TSX: BOX.UN) (NYSE: BOXC) announced today that Exchange Tower in downtown Toronto has achieved the prestigious LEED EB:OM (Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance) Gold certification.

In a multi-phase effort over the past several years, Brookfield engaged green solution providers and building tenants and worked diligently to enhance the building's environmental profile. The property's LEED certification score placed it in the 94th percentile among comparable buildings.

"Together, we have made this building a safer and healthier place for all occupants while reducing our impact to the natural environment," said Jan Sucharda, president and CEO of Brookfield Canada Office Properties.

Several facets of the property's industry-leading practices and environmental policies helped Exchange Tower achieve the LEED Gold distinction:

  • Enhanced indoor air quality to further improve health, comfort and productivity of occupants.
  • A "Smart Commute" alternative transportation program that provides building occupants with tools and information about sustainable commuting options.
  • Enhanced green cleaning and solid waste management policies and procedures.
  • New internal sustainable purchasing policies to track sustainable foods and low-mercury lamps.

Exchange Tower is the 24th Brookfield building throughout North America to achieve LEED certification. Many other Brookfield assets are currently under review for LEED approval, with 10 additional buildings targeted for certification this year, seven of which are in Canada. The list of certifications is growing by the month, underscoring Brookfield's commitment as an industry leader to create and operate the most environmentally conscious and sustainable commercial real estate throughout its global platform.
