BorgWarner Inc. (BWA) has announced the introduction of a new three-stage turbo charging technology in BMW's M Performance diesel engine, the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine in the world. The company’s innovative technology will enhance the engine’s performance, fuel efficiency and reduce emission level.

The M550d xDrive Sedan and Touring, X5 M50d Touring, and X6 M50d models of BMW M automobiles are equipped with this 3.0-liter engine. It provides maximum output of 280 kW (381 HP) and a maximum torque of 740 Nm (546 lb-ft).

BorgWaner’s turbocharging systems consist of two BV45 high-pressure variable turbine geometry turbochargers, which are integrated to one larger B2 low-pressure water-cooled turbocharger. This increases the capability of the engine compared to the two-stage turbocharging systems.

The BMW M550d xDrive Sedan with the three-stage turbocharging technology increases output by 25% to 93.6 kW per liter of displacement from 75.2 kW per liter by BMW 740d vehicle with two-stage turbocharging system. The new engine is also 8% more fuel efficient and complies with the Euro 6 emissions standards.

BorgWarner is a leading manufacturer of powertrain products for the world's major automakers. The company operates in 57 locations in 19 countries, providing products that are capable of improving vehicle performance and stability along with fuel efficiency and emission levels.
