The employees of EDO Corporation (NYSE: EDO) have contributed a total of $126,489 towards Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The company has matched all employees' donations, bringing the total contribution to $252,978. On August 31, EDO launched a fund raising effort for the victims affected in all Gulf Coast states. This effort included a pledge by the company to match, dollar for dollar, employee contributions made to charitable organizations specifically for disaster relief. Matching funds were donated to the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. In a statement to employees, CEO James M. Smith said, "I would like to sincerely thank all of our employees who contributed towards such an important cause. Thank you for caring about the thousands of victims who continue to face incredible hardship. We know that our contributions will help their recovery and we will monitor the situation to see if there will be other opportunities for all of us to help." EDO operates a specialty-plastics facility in Baton Rouge, La. that services the offshore oil-drilling industry. No EDO employees were injured and there was no damage to the facility. However, a number of employees have family and/or friends that were evacuated from their homes and sought refuge in Baton Rouge. Many employees made considerable personal efforts to provide assistance. In addition, a number of EDO employees were called upon to provide professional services and expertise in the relief effort. These services ranged from hydrographic surveys focused at re-opening the shipping channels to marine mammal rescue.
