Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B) and Axentra are
helping to make "anywhere, anytime" access for consumers a reality
by collaborating on a comprehensive reference platform for
residential gateways and home media servers. The Digital Home
Center platform combines HipServ software from Axentra, a leading
provider of personal digital content and services software
platforms, and the MPC8349E mITX reference board, containing a
PowerPC(R) core, from Freescale. Freescale and Axentra are
partnering on the Digital Home Center platform to address the
growing market for customer premises equipment (CPE) with remote
access capabilities and home-based content management. This
emerging class of CPE products makes it easy for consumers to
access digital content from networked equipment in any room in the
house -- or remotely from any location in the world from one simple
user interface. According to iSuppli research, there are more than
45 million installed home networks worldwide today, and this number
is forecast to exceed 120 million by 2009. More than 60 million of
these home networks will be media-enabled, fueling the demand for
"anywhere, anytime" access to content (photos, video, music, games,
movies) in the digital home. Freescale's and Axentra's turnkey
hardware/software reference platform is designed for OEMs, ODMs and
service providers who want to develop digital home CPE products and
bring them to market quickly and at minimal cost. The resulting
products will enable consumers to connect all of their digital
networked appliances and benefit from unified content and services
management capabilities from locations around the world. "The
Digital Home Center reference platform targets a new breed of home
consumer: the digital content enthusiast who wants to access,
manage, back-up and share a wealth of files from any location, and
HipServ is designed to do that very well," said Lynelle McKay, vice
president and general manager of Freescale's Digital Systems
Division. "Many leading CPE manufacturers and service providers are
anticipating this remote-access and content-sharing trend and are
seeking leading-edge platform solutions like ours to streamline
development of digital home center products." "HipServ is the first
software platform that will unify the content needs of users at
home in a simple and easy experience," said Marc Benglia, chief
executive officer of Axentra. "From anywhere, consumers can always
access their content through HipServ and share it securely.
Freescale's PowerQUICC II Pro processor is a perfect platform to
deploy HipServ software because it provides the cost-effective
performance and connectivity required to manage digital content in
the home." About Axentra's HipServ software HipServ is a
comprehensive digital home software platform offering a simple
unified user experience as well as a personal digital content
management. HipServ makes access to and sharing of any home-based
content simple and secure. In addition, HipServ easily detects any
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) compliant device in the home and
adds it to the HipServ platform, enabling simple, centralized
content management. Service providers and OEMs can integrate
HipServ into their existing portals and deploy next-generation
services that allow users to manage content from within the home or
remotely. HipServ can reside on any home-based CPE device, such as
a residential gateway, network-attached storage (NAS) home media
server, set-top box or personal computer. HipServ software clears
the complexities of networking and aggregating of content for ease
of use and file management flexibility. Key HipServ software
