LOS ANGELES, April 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Critically-acclaimed novelist Don
Winslow, author of such bestsellers as Savages (which
was made into the 2012 Oliver Stone-directed film of the same name)
and The Kings of Cool, has written a three-part serial
titled Extreme exclusively for Playboy
magazine. Winslow's newest work of fiction debuts in the
magazine's May 2014 issue (on
newsstands and Playboy SFW now) and will continue
to run through its July/August 2014
edition.
This original novella follows a group of thrill-seeking athletes
who live and die by the rip of a parachute cord. As they question
their own mortality, the adrenaline addicts turn to a new form of
reckless endangerment to fuel their heart-pounding adventures.
Winslow is writing the serial on deadline.
"For a fiction writer, having a story run in
Playboy—never mind several—is like
getting your passport stamped," said Winslow. "I'm honored to be
included in the magazine's ranks with Ian
Fleming, Joseph Heller,
Norman Mailer, James Ellroy,
Ray Bradbury, Margaret Atwood . . . the list goes on and
on. This is the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition, and I
couldn't be more pleased."
Playboy has published serials of esteemed writers many
times in its 60-year history. Vladimir
Nabokov's Ada appeared in the magazine in 1969;
Norman Mailer's three-part
serialization of The Executioner's Song appeared in the
October, November, and December 1979
issues of Playboy. In recent years, Playboy has
published two serials that were written for deadline: Denis Johnson's four-part noir thriller,
Nobody Move, in 2008, and James Ellroy's four-part
Hilliker Curse in 2009.
"Winslow is doing some of his tightest writing in this serial,"
said Playboy Editorial Director Jimmy Jellinek. "We're honored to have him in
our pages again, and we look forward to publishing the next two
installments."
Winslow was first published in the pages of Playboy for
the magazine's 60th anniversary January/February 2014 issue with By Sun and
Lightning, a tale of two thieves that test the power of love
against a bullet, a backstabbing fixer and imminent arrest. He
joins a long list of some of the most pre-eminent names in fiction
who have written for the magazine, including: Ian Fleming, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Michael Crichton, Jack Kerouac, Ray Bradbury, Margaret
Atwood, Norman Mailer,
Jay McInerney, Anne Rice, Mario
Puzo, Joyce Carol Oates,
Scott Turow, Roald Dahl, Ron

Stephen King, Donna Tartt, Chuck
Palahniuk, Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle, Irvine Welsh,
Tom Clancy, Truman Capote, Carlos
Fuentes, Hunter S. Thompson,

Boal, Bret Easton Ellis,
