Pulitzer Inc. Reports Fifth-Period Revenue For Four Weeks Ended May
30, 2004 ST. LOUIS, June 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pulitzer Inc.
(NYSE:PTZ) today announced that revenue increased 5.4 percent for
the four-week accounting period ended May 30, 2004 and increased
4.8 percent for the twenty- two-week year-to-date period when
compared to the respective 2003 periods. May 2004 advertising
revenue in St. Louis and at the 12 Pulitzer Newspapers, Inc.
("PNI") markets increased 6.2 percent, with increases of 2.6
percent at the St. Louis operations and 15.7 percent at PNI. On a
comparable basis, excluding the results of PNI acquisitions absent
in the comparable periods of 2003, total revenue increased 4.3
percent for the four-week period ended May 30, 2004 and increased
3.9 percent for the twenty- two-week year-to-date period. Total
comparable advertising revenue increased 4.9 percent for the
four-week period ended May 30, 2004 and increased 4.6 percent for
the twenty-two-week year-to-date period. Fifth period 2004
comparable advertising revenue increased 2.6 percent at the St.
Louis operations and 10.9 percent at PNI. Comparable advertising
revenue increased 3.1 percent at the St. Louis operations and 8.8
percent at PNI for the twenty- two-week year-to-date period. The
principal components of the fifth-period comparable advertising
revenue results for St. Louis and PNI were: -- Comparable retail
advertising revenue, including preprints, increased 3.5 percent.
Comparable retail ROP revenue increased 1.0 percent, principally
due to gains in the grocery and electronic segments, as well as
gains in local territory revenue, which increased 13.2 percent in
St. Louis. The St. Louis declines relate to weakness in the
department store, entertainment, home improvement, and furniture
categories. Comparable retail ROP revenue decreased 2.0 percent in
St. Louis and increased 6.6 percent at PNI. Comparable retail
preprint revenue increased 8.9 percent in St. Louis and 7.9 percent
at PNI. -- Comparable fifth period national advertising revenue,
including preprints, decreased 13.9 percent versus 2003,
principally due to weakness in the pharmaceutical, telecom, and
travel categories, as well as tough comps versus 2003, particularly
in St. Louis. Comparable national preprint revenue decreased 21.8
percent for the period and comparable national ROP revenue
decreased 12.9 percent. Comparable national advertising revenue,
including preprints, decreased 13.6 percent in St. Louis and 17.9
percent at PNI. -- Comparable classified revenue increased 12.2
percent, with growth in all major categories. Comparable Classified

May 2004 revenue associated with the Company's 50 percent interest
in the Tucson Newspaper Agency ("TNI") increased 5.1 percent, and
total advertising revenue increased 7.0 percent. TNI retail
revenue, including preprints, increased 3.8 percent with a 6.2
percent decrease in retail ROP offset by a 41.4 percent increase in
retail preprint revenue. Local territory revenues increased 28.5
percent for the period. TNI national revenue, including preprints,
decreased 28.8 percent. May classified revenue increased 17.0
percent. St. Louis Post-Dispatch Labor Settlement On June 6, 2004,
the members of the St. Louis Newspaper Guild approved a new
five-year contract. Under the terms of the new contract, Guild
members will receive wage increases of 5 percent or 6 percent in
the first year (prior to the new contract, Guild members had not
received a wage increase in the previous year and a half), of
approximately $0.6 million 2004, depending on the employees' pay
classification. Annual wage increases would decrease each of the
next four years, ending with 2.5 percent in the final year of the
contract. The new contract requires workers to pay 15 percent of
their health insurance premiums in the contract's first year,
increasing to 25 percent by the third year of the contract. In
addition, Guild members will receive a one-time signing bonus in
the cumulative amount of approximately $0.4 million. The Guild
represents approximately 600 newsroom, advertising, circulation,
and support workers at the Post-Dispatch. Pulitzer Inc., through
