Pawn Company Pays for Injury Caused By Used Product it Sold In
First of Its Kind Case, Cash America Agrees to Settlement; Injured
Worker 'Set for Life' MCALLEN, Texas, June 9 /PRNewswire/ --
Houston attorney Rob Ammons and attorneys representing Cash America
Pawn shops (NYSE:PWN) have settled a lawsuit involving a worker,
Francisco Sarao, who was paralyzed due to a defective piece of
safety equipment that Cash America sold. The settlement came in day
three of a trial in Judge Rudy Delgado's 93rd Judicial District
Court in Hidalgo County, Texas. "While the amount of the settlement
is confidential," says Mr. Ammons, "Francisco -- who is 24 years
old and will be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life -- will be
well cared for. And to me, that's what matters most." In August
2001, Mr. Sarao was trimming trees in Weslaco, Texas, using a
safety harness his employer had purchased in used condition at a
Cash America Pawn shop. He fell 30 feet to the ground and was
paralyzed from the waist down. An investigation determined Mr.
Sarao fell when a safety ring on his harness broke. It also showed
someone had altered the harness, removing the bright orange warning
labels that direct people in its proper use. Cash America sold the
harness in this altered condition. "It's the first case I know of
in which a pawn shop has resolved a product liability claim arising
out of a product it sold," Mr. Ammons says. Cash America Pawn, with
headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, runs the largest number of pawn
shops in the country, with some 400 locations. Attorney Robert
Ammons is founder of the Ammons Law Firm, a firm dedicated to
protecting the rights of people injured through the carelessness of

automobile accidents, defective products, medical negligence and
