Employees far exceed expectations; participation more than doubles original pledge amount

Standard Insurance Company (“The Standard”) announced today that $534,000 has been raised through its 2014 Employee Giving Campaign for the OHSU Knight Cancer Challenge. This includes more than $180,000 pledged by current and retired employees of The Standard, as well as a two-to-one corporate match.

In June of this year, The Standard pledged a minimum of $250,000 to the Knight Cancer Challenge through various Employee Giving Campaign events including its Jeans Day program. Thanks to the generosity of company employees, record-breaking participation and a corporate double-match for this year’s campaign, The Standard more than doubled its original pledge.

The Standard’s Jeans Day program encourages employees to donate $100 or more to a designated nonprofit partner in exchange for the opportunity to wear jeans – next year on both Thursdays and Fridays. As part of the giving campaign, The Standard matched employee and retiree donations to the Knight Cancer Challenge two-to-one as an added incentive.

“We could not be more proud of our employees and retirees for stepping up to support the Knight Cancer Challenge during this year’s campaign,” said Greg Ness, chairman, president and CEO of The Standard. “This is an opportunity for all of us at The Standard to help end cancer as we know it, and we encourage all businesses and Oregonians to join this effort.”

The Standard is also a member of Unite for the Knight, a coalition of Oregon businesses and labor groups working together to help OHSU meet the $1 billion Knight Cancer Challenge.

OHSU has raised more than $440 million so far, but still must raise approximately $60 million more to reach the $500 million mark needed to trigger an equal gift from Nike Co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny. Unite for the Knight is working to help them cross the finish line.

“We continue to be inspired by the support we’re receiving from Oregonians and those throughout our region who want to make an impact against cancer,” said Brian Druker, M.D., director of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. “The Standard’s generous employees, retirees and corporate two-to-one match move us that much closer to meeting the Knight Cancer Challenge. We are sincerely grateful for their generosity.”

More than 1,500 current and retired employees donated to the Knight Cancer Challenge as part of The Standard’s Employee Giving Campaign.
