Syniverse Achieves New Mobile Messaging Records

Moving an average of almost 1.3 billion messages per day in the
fourth quarter of 2009, Syniverse Technologies (NYSE:SVR) says it
continues to see significant growth of the company’s
application-to-person (A2P) and peer-to-peer (P2P) message delivery
across its network.
“Mobile messaging clearly is a force in today’s mobile
ecosystem,” said Tony Holcombe, President and CEO, Syniverse. “The
rising number of messages that Syniverse delivers on a daily basis
leaves little doubt that mobile subscribers are relying more on
their mobile devices and associated messaging as a primary way to
stay connected with friends, families, employees and
customers.”
Holcombe said organic growth in Syniverse messaging spans across
the company’s short message service (SMS) for text messages,
multimedia message service (MMS) for pictures and video, and mobile
enterprise services (MES) solutions. MES provides businesses a way
to send time- and event-based text messages to their employees,
customers and partners around the globe.
“As expected, we saw an uptick of activity around the holidays,”
he said. “Syniverse hit a new record when we delivered 1.9 billion
SMS messages on Christmas Day 2009, up 52 percent from 1.2 billion
just the year before. And on Halloween, Syniverse achieved a new
MMS record with the delivery of 21.2 million messages, up 173
percent from 2008.”
The Syniverse MMS Interworking Gateway platform realized its
most significant rise in traffic volume during the fourth quarter
2009, with a 170 percent increase from the year before. The daily
average of MMS messages delivered by Syniverse in 2009 exceeded the
previous year’s record by more 128 percent.
Holcombe said he’s not surprised by the intensification in
picture and video messaging.
“As smartphones get in the hands of more people, as MMS
applications become easier to use, and as the photo and video
quality of mobile devices continues to improve, I expect we’ll see
ongoing growth in the MMS arena,” he said. “In fact, I fully expect
mobile devices will eventually replace standalone digital cameras
in the coming years, and the only people to carry both a mobile
device and a camera will be professional photographers.”
MES also continues to be a strong area for Syniverse as more
consumers show an interest in A2P applications, such as mobile
banking. In the last quarter of 2009 alone, Syniverse saw a 76
percent increase in the total number of enterprise messages
delivered year-over-year. Today, Syniverse’s growing global mobile
banking and financial services customer base includes six of the
top 10 U.S. banking brands, two of the top five credit card issuers
and two of the top three U.S.-based global airline carriers.
Additionally, two of the top three banking institutions in India
also rely on Syniverse to power their mobile banking and alerting
services.
“A lifestyle that fully incorporates mobile messaging is here to
stay, and Syniverse will continue to provide the support and
technology needed to ensure reliable message delivery for
everyone.”
Syniverse NEXTSM messaging solutions include MetcalfTM
Intercarrier SMS, an outsourced intercarrier messaging solution for
wireless operators jointly provided by Syniverse and RealNetworks,
Inc.; SMS Interworking Gateway Service for IP; SMS Open
Connectivity Hub; MMS Interworking Gateway Service; and Mobile
