Brazil mobile phone subscriptions increased to 215 million in May, up 1.16% from April, according to figures released late Tuesday by telecommunications regulator Anatel.

New subscriptions totaled 2.5 million in May, Anatel said.

Vivo Participacoes SA (VIVO4.BR) maintained market leadership in May, with a 29.48% share of subscriptions. Vivo is controlled by Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF.MC).

Claro, the local unit of Mexico's America Movil SA (AMX.MX), was in second place for May with a 25.46% market share, followed by TIM Participacoes SA (TCSL4.BR) with a 25.34% share. TIM is the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA (TIT.MI).

In fourth-place, mobile-phone operator Tele Norte Leste SA (TNE, TNLP4.BR), or Oi, with a 19.38% share in May.
