Travelers shares RISE 2.7% on first post-Ian Q.

"Property-casualty insurer Travelers Cos. TRV 2.66%? posted a 31% decline in net income in the third quarter, as claims from Hurricane Ian weighed down results and net investment income fell from an unusually strong year-earlier quarter.

The company said its catastrophe costs increased 11% to $512 million pretax, net of reinsurance, from the year-earlier period, which also was a tough quarter for the nation’s property insurers. Then, Hurricane Ida landed in Louisiana and brought tornadoes and catastrophic flooding as it worked its way to the Northeastern U.S. Travelers’ year-earlier third-quarter catastrophe costs totaled $501 million.

Travelers, part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, is one of the first big publicly traded property insurers to post quarterly earnings. It reported net income of $454 million, down from $662 million a year earlier.

"Travelers (NYSE:TRV) Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To US$0.93"

The board of The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 30th of June to US$0.93. The announced payment will take the dividend yield to 2.0%, which is in line with the average for the industry."

"Travelers Companies' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Before making this announcement, Travelers Companies was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 14.1% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 27%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future."

Look at insurance stocks, historically, as interest rates rise and/or are higher. I think you'll see companies like Universal go back up to the $20's, and I think PGR might get above $125 within a year or so...... IMO.

June 4: "Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) Increasing Dividend To $0.88"
(from $0.85)

"The board of The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 30th of June to $0.88. Based on the announced payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 2.1%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Travelers Companies' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Before making this announcement, Travelers Companies was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 3.4%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 32%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend"

Amazing: "Travelers paid dividends for 150 years straight and increased dividends for 17 consecutive years."

"If you're a dividend investor, you want to invest in companies that make continuous dividend payments. If you can find a company that increases those dividends regularly, even better. S&P 500 companies that increase dividends annually for 25 years or more earn the coveted title of Dividend Aristocrats.

Dividend Aristocrats generally provide investors with a sense of security, thanks to their reliable dividend increases. These companies have proven themselves as stalwarts operating in more established industries, have a steady earnings history, and have less volatile stock prices as a result.

The insurance industry produces a lot of solid dividend companies, and one insurer that has demonstrated its ability to increase its dividends annually is Travelers (NYSE:TRV). It's well on its way to Dividend Aristocrat status, rewarding investors with higher dividend payments for 17 consecutive years now. "

Buffett's TRV Holding

"18: Travelers Companies (TRV)
Percent of Warren Buffett’s Portfolio: 0.2%
Dividend Yield: 2.5% Forward P/E Ratio: 11.3x (as of 11/15/18)
Sector: Financials Industry: Property and Casualty Insurance
Dividend Growth Streak: 14 years

Travelers is actually a competitor to Berkshire Hathaway's Geico business, which Buffett has studied closely since 1951. The company insures over 6 million customers, with business and specialty insurance lines accounting for over 65% of net written premiums.

Buffett loves the insurance industry's business model. Specifically, property and casualty insurers like Travelers collect money upfront when they sell a new policy. However, until claims are made, they don't have to pay the money back.

In the meantime, this pool of money can be invested in stocks and bonds to earn a return. So long as the insurer is skilled at risk management, in theory it should mint money.

Travelers certainly fits the bill and has proven to be a disciplined operator over the years. Throughout the last five years the firm's average combined ratio (incurred losses and expenses divided by earned premiums) sits below 100% in both its commercial and personal insurance lines, meaning they turned a profit on average before taking investment gains into account.

With such impressive scale, including being the only carrier with a top five market position in all major commercial product lines, Travelers also benefits from the vast amounts of claim data it can crunch to better price its policies. The firm can also meet more of its customers' needs, gaining greater wallet share and efficiencies.

Thanks to these advantages, management targets a mid-teens return on equity over time, which is about double the industry average. However, the underwriting cycle is notoriously cyclical due to its high competitive intensity; anyone with enough capital can sell an insurance policy.

Travelers has shown great discipline by pulling back on growth when the industry's policy terms are unfavorable, helping preserve its profitability.

Simply put, Travelers possesses many of the qualities Buffett likes in a business. TRV's stock declined more than 15% from its January 2018 high through early July, providing an opportunity for Berkshire to initiate a position.

The property and casualty insurance industry faced tough times last year due to an unusually high number of natural catastrophes, but Berkshire's ground-level visibility and conviction to put some money to work in Travelers suggests better times could be ahead.

Know This Trade Level For Travelers Companies Inc

Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) is a leading insurance holding company that covers property and casualty insurance to businesses, government units and individuals. Last week, TRV stock dropped sharply after reporting earnings. Today, the stock is trading down 0.18 to $128.14 a share. Currently, the stock is hovering just below its important 200-day moving average. This pattern formation is indicating further downside in the near term for the stock price. Traders should now watch the $128.00 area as the next major support level for the insurance giant. This support area is where the stock broke out in October 2017. Remember, often prior breakout levels will be major support when retested.

Insurance Stocks Dump After Hurricane Harvey

As you all know, many of the leading insurance stocks are selling off today after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas. The damage from the storm is unprecedented and the final costs to the insurance companies will not be known for a while. Insurance stocks such as Travelers Companies Inc(NYSE:TRV), Allstate Corp(NYSE:ALL), Progressive Corp(NYSE:PGR) and others are trading sharply lower during today's trading session.

Travelers Companies Inc(NYSE:TRV) is a leading component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJIA). This stock is weighing on the DJIA today since this index is price cap weighted. Today, TRV stock is trading lower by $3.73 to $122.74 a share. The stock is now approaching its 200-day moving average which will be short term support. Unfortunately, by the time the dust settles on the damage in Texas this stock could actually decline further. Traders should now focus on the $118.00 area as the next major chart support level. This level was defended in April 2017 and will likely be major support again when retested.

Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) is finally having a corrective move. The stock had an amazing move from $103.50 to $123.00 between November and December 2016. In Travelers' history, this percentage move in such a short time is unparalleled. As impressive a move as that was, the stock is now correcting sharply lower. As the stock collapses, smart investors are looking for the perfect entry price. The buy level that stands out is found by simply looking at the daily moving averages. The 50 and 200 moving averages are together at a price of $114.75. In addition, the Fibonacci 38.2% retrace is right above that. This gives the best investors and traders in the world a solid entry range of $115.00. I will be looking to buy here.
