University of Pittsburgh Accepting Applications for Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship

PITTSBURGH, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Mellon Financial Corporation
and the University of Pittsburgh today announced that applications
are being accepted for the 2007 Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship. Now
in its 21st year, the one-year, $5,000 Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship
is awarded by a panel of nationally recognized jazz musicians on
the basis of musical ability as demonstrated by an audition tape or
CD that includes samplings of various musical styles. Any full-time
undergraduate student who will be enrolled at Pitt during the fall
2007 semester is eligible to apply for the scholarship. The current
Pitt/Mellon Jazz scholar, guitarist Frank Velardo, is a native of
Long Island, New York, and graduate of Hempfield High School in
Landisville, Lancaster County, Pa. A member of the Pitt Jazz
Ensemble, Velardo is mixing business courses with his music
studies, and performs locally at jazz jam sessions and with his
group Wolfgang and the Hat at campus events. "The 2007 Pitt/Mellon
Jazz Scholarship renews support for jazz education and the Jazz
Studies program at Pitt that have been hallmarks of Mellon Jazz for
more than 20 years," said Rose M. Gabbianelli, Mellon executive
vice president and director of corporate affairs. "Mellon Jazz has
been a great, long-time friend to the jazz studies program at Pitt,
and we're delighted to be joining with Mellon again this year in
the selection of a Pitt/Mellon Jazz scholarship recipient," said
Pitt Jazz Studies director Nathan Davis. Applications for the
Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship must be submitted by May 14. For more
