SAN FRANCISCO, April 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today announced the appointment of John T. Conway to head the utility's newly created Energy Supply organization. Conway will now lead PG&E's previously separate power generation and power procurement functions as Senior Vice President, Energy Supply, and Chief Nuclear Officer. Most recently, Conway served as PG&E's Senior Vice President, Generation, and Chief Nuclear Officer. "By forming a new Energy Supply organization, we are establishing a single point for ensuring that PG&E is planning for and delivering the supplies of reliable, clean energy our customers count on," said Peter A. Darbee, Chairman, CEO and President of PG&E Corporation and CEO of Pacific Gas and Electric Company. "John has demonstrated an exceptional ability to drive high performance and a talent for solid execution. We are confident he will bring the same strong leadership to his new role." Within the new organization, Fong Wan, Senior Vice President, Energy Procurement, will continue to be responsible for managing PG&E's diverse and substantial portfolio of power supply contracts with other generators. These contracts account for approximately 60 percent of the energy delivered to PG&E customers, complementing the company's utility-owned generation. Wan's organization is also responsible for all natural gas procurement activities on behalf of PG&E's core natural gas customers. He will report to Conway. In a sign of the growing significance that renewable energy is playing in the company's supply mix, PG&E also appointed Steven E. Malnight, Vice President, Renewable Energy, to oversee the company's emerging utility-owned renewable business and ongoing renewable energy contracting. This newly created position will report to Wan. Malnight will lead PG&E's solicitation, negotiation and management of new renewable projects and supply arrangements with renewable energy providers. Last year, the company negotiated 1,800 megawatts of new renewable energy agreements and it has recently filed an application with the California Public Utilities Commission for up to 500 megawatts of solar power, half of which will be utility-owned. "We are fully committed to increasing the supplies of renewable energy available for our customers," said Darbee. "Creating this new position strengthens our renewables team and reflects the important role these initiatives will play in providing our customers with renewable energy in the future. Steve's leadership will be a tremendous asset as we continue driving this area of the business." Malnight joined PG&E in 2002 as a member of the company's MBA Leadership Program. Since then, he has held leadership roles at the director level in the company's Customer Care and Finance functions. Most recently, he has served as Special Assistant to the Chairman and CEO, Peter Darbee. Malnight holds an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. in Finance from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. These new appointments are effective immediately.
