Carrefour SA (CA.FR) said Wednesday that it is launching an
independent audit of all slaughterhouses that supply products under
some of its brands, while the company becomes the first French
retailer to ask for cameras to be installed inside its
abattoirs.
Carrefour said the independent audit covers products under its
Carrefour, Carrefour Bio and Reflets de France brands, as well as
products for its Carrefour Quality Lines.
The audit will check if conditions are compliant with the
animal-protection framework created by the Oeuvre d'assistance aux
Betes d'Abattoirs, a nonprofit association, and will be carried out
by auditors from Bureau Veritas.
"As of today, Carrefour becomes the first French retailer to ask
all of its suppliers to install cameras in their slaughterhouses,"
the company said.
Carrefour said the first audit was carried out on Dec. 20 at the
Limoges slaughterhouse.
