GoSolarUSA took note of a flexible solar sheet, capable of harvesting more than 90 percent of available sunlight, that an engineer at the University of Missouri chemical engineering department is in the process of developing.

Patrick Pinhero, an associate professor in the MU Chemical Engineering Department, said Monday his research team is developing a thin, moldable sheet of small antennas called nantenna designed to harvest industrial waste heat and convert it into usable electricity. The researchers hope to extend this concept to direct solar-facing nantenna devices capable of collecting energy broadly from the near infrared to the optical regions of the solar spectrum.

Because it’s a flexible film, Pinhero believes these “solar sheets” could be incorporated into building materials and infrastructure. According to MU’s press release, prototypes of the radically new solar technology could be produced within the next five years.

“This new technology has the potential to be an incredible breakthrough,” said GSLO President and CEO Tyson Rohde. “A solar sheet capable of harvesting energy from practically the entire light spectrum would blow away current solar cells, which only collect about 20 percent of available light. The possibilities for their usage in consumer electronics such as the Volt Solar Charger are very intriguing, indeed.”

The potential uses for nantenna-tech solar sheets don’t end there, however. Pinhero says his team envisions several commercial product spin-offs based on the core technology. These include improved contraband-identifying products for airports and the military, optical computing, and infrared line-of-sight telecommunications.

“Our overall goal is to collect and utilize as much solar energy as is theoretically possible and bring it to the commercial market in an inexpensive package that is accessible to everyone,” Pinhero said. “If successful, this product will put us orders of magnitudes ahead of the current solar energy technologies we have available to us today.”

GoSolarUSA is dedicated to aggressively acquiring, developing and marketing promising and potentially profitable technology. The Volt Solar Charger is a solar-powered battery pack accessory developed to complement the iPhone, a product of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), which competes in the global mobile electronics market against Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:MMI) and Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM).
