--The U.K.'s National Farmers' Union warned against a potential
merger of supermarkets J Sainsbury's PLC (JSAIY) and Asda Group
Ltd., saying it could squeeze prices for farmers and affect choices
available to shoppers, Reuters reports Tuesday.
--The union's head of food and farming told the U.K. Competition
and Markets Authority that farmers were concerned over a promise by
the companies to bring savings to shoppers without affecting
farmers, the report said.
--In April, Walmart Inc. (WMT) said it would sell Asda to rival
Sainsbury's in a deal that values the chain at about GBP7.3 billion
($10.1 billion) and would, if successful, create the largest player
in the U.K.'s fiercely competitive grocery market.
