During the production and transportation phases, crude oil is repeatedly transferred through vessels and pipelines. By nature, crude oil contains many undesirable components such as particulate matter, metals, paraffin, sediment, dirt, water and other materials. Throughout the transfer phase of crude oil, these undesirable materials fall out and collect at the bottom of storage tanks, �bottoms� and adhere to pipes and equipment.
