After Wednesday's Bell Market Commentary
On Wednesday, the markets closed mixed despite oil prices
sliding and factory orders rising more than expected. The Commerce
Department said factory orders rose 1.3 percent after an upwardly
revised 2.1 percent gain in June. The Federal Reserve's new
snapshot of business conditions underscored the toll the housing,
credit and financial debacles are having on the economy and the
challenges likely to be faced by the next president. Light, sweet
crude futures ended the day down 36 cents at $109.35 a barrel. The
dollar rose against the euro and pound, but weakened against the
yen. Gold prices fell for a third straight session. Bond prices
moved higher. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 15.96, or 0.14
percent, to 11,532.88. The Nasdaq composite index fell 15.51, or
0.66 percent, to 2,333.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell
2.60, or 0.20 percent, to 1,274.98. The Russell 2000 index rose
3.40, or 0.46 percent, to 741.91.
