CABLE & WIRELESS AND NOKIA TO DEVELOP
INDUSTRY'S FIRST GLOBAL WIRELESS INTERNET AND HOSTED
APPLICATIONS
Cable & Wireless, the global telecommunications group,
today (6 July 2000) announced a landmark relationship
with Nokia to create the world's first truly global,
wireless internet platform. The agreement supports Cable
& Wireless' drive to 'wireless-enable' its core IP
capabilities and marks the next step in Cable & Wireless'
strategy to deliver high-performance internet protocol
(IP) and data services to business customers.
This landmark relationship with Nokia Networks, the
infrastructure arm of Nokia, means:
Mobile operators, internet service providers (ISPs)and
dot.coms can rapidly enter into the high growth
wireless internet market without having to build their
own hosting platforms
Tailored wireless access services for multinational
corporates and large business customers
The addition of a wireless capability to Cable &
Wireless' application service provision (ASP) portfolio
This global wireless internet platform, hosted in Cable &
Wireless' data centres, will provide fully managed
wireless internet services to second and third generation
mobile network operators, internet service providers and
large corporates.
Graham Wallace, Chief Executive, Cable and Wireless plc,
said:
"Analysts believe that in the next three years, 350
million people will be accessing internet content via
mobile devices. Cable & Wireless will offer a fully
managed end-to-end wireless internet service to our
business customers which allows them to benefit from the
huge growth in this market.
"By combining the strength of our global IP
infrastructure and hosting centres with Nokia's
innovative wireless internet solutions and leading
position in the mobile market,
Cable & Wireless is opening up this new market for its
customers."
Sari Baldauf, president, Nokia Networks, said:
"The agreement with Cable & Wireless is an excellent
example of making Nokia's vision of the mobile
information society a reality. With its solid business
model, Cable & Wireless is able to support mobile
operators, ISPs and corporate customers to make their IP
business mobile. Nokia is delighted to be working with
Cable & Wireless, in the delivery of leading end-to-end
solutions for the mobile internet era."
Rapid entry into high growth wireless internet market for
mobile operators and ISPs
The service will give mobile operators, ISPs and dot.com
companies immediate access to a wide portfolio of
wireless applications that can be sold on to their
customers under their own brand. Without the need to
build their own wireless hosting infrastructure, these
customers have immediate access to a new market, using
the Cable & Wireless global IP infrastructure.
Nick Jeffery, President, Partner Services, Cable &
Wireless, explained:
"This co-operation builds on our position as a key
supplier of managed services to the mobile operator and
ISP community. The combined expertise, infrastructure
and capability of both organisations will enable our
mobile-operator and ISP customers to address cost
effectively the phenomenal growth that the wireless
internet market is already starting to experience. This
agreement is further evidence of our commitment to lead
the market in providing managed innovative services for
Cable & Wireless' carrier and service provider
customers."
Tailored wireless access services for multinational
corporates and enterprise customers
The co-operation will also lead to the development of
tailored wireless internet services for Cable & Wireless'
corporate customers that will enable their employees and
customers to access web sites, applications and corporate
information systems from their wireless devices.
Under the agreement, Cable & Wireless is supplying the
datacentre infrastructure and connectivity to Cable &
Wireless' global IP backbone. Nokia is providing the
services platform, innovative applications and systems
integration that are compatible with Cable & Wireless'
world-class internet systems.
The new agreement anticipates Cable & Wireless offering
services later this year. Initially, Cable & Wireless
will offer the service to customers in Europe from the
company's data centre in Swindon in the UK, opening next
week. Customers in the US will be offered the service
from datacentres in Reston, Virginia, opened last
November, and Santa Clara, California, to be opened this
year, while services for customers in Asia will be hosted
by datacentres in Tokyo and Osaka. All centres will be on
Cable & Wireless global IP infrastructure and will
further strengthen the company's position as a leading
web hosting company.
The market analysts, Forrester, estimate wireless
internet revenues will soar from $5.3m in 2000 to $3.8bn
in 2005. Nokia estimates the number of mobile phone users
will reach the one billion mark at the end of 2002 with
more handsets connected to the internet than PCs by the
end of 2003. Cable & Wireless is capturing value from
the global growth of mobile communications by 'wireless-
enabling' its core IP assets and leveraging its close
relationships with mobile operators and other leading
service providers. With its global IP infrastructure and
capabilities, Cable & Wireless is well positioned to work
with winners of third generation (UMTS) licences and
mobile virtual network operators to support their network
roll-out and carry mobile originated internet traffic.
