    SIR SELWYN CUSHING STEPS ASIDE AS CHAIRMAN OF BIL

    The Board of Directors of Brierley Investments Limited ("BIL") wishes to
    announce that Sir Selwyn Cushing has stepped aside as Chairman of the
    Board of BIL pending the outcome of a proposal by Quantas Airways to
    acquire a significant shareholding in Air New Zealand from both BIL and
    Singapore Airlines Limited.

    Earlier today Sir Selwyn advised the New Zealand Stock Exchange that,
    pending the same outcome, he is also stepping aside as Chairman of Air New
    Zealand.

    Sir Selwyn will remain as a director of both Air New Zealand and BIL.
