DDD SIGNS 3D MOVIE DISTRIBUTION DEAL
October 14th, 2003
DDD Group plc ("DDD"), the developer of 3D technology, today announced that it
has entered into a three year, multi-title movie licencing agreement with nWave
Pictures NV ("nWave") allowing DDD to publish nWave's library of blockbuster 3D
animated movies in DDD's TriDefTM Movie Player format allowing viewers to watch
the nWave movies in 3D without glasses.
nWave Pictures is the world's leading producer of 3D animated movies for large
format theaters, ride films (for theme parks) and location based digital
theaters. The titles include "Haunted Castle", "SOS Planet", "Alien Adventure"
and "3D Mania: Encounter in the Third Dimension." ('3D Mania') which has grossed
nearly $40 million in box office receipts since its release in 1999.
Under the terms of the deal, DDD will publish the nWave movies on DVD in its
TriDef 3D format that allows the movies to be played in 3D on the new generation
of "glasses-free" 3D displays. DDD will provide the specially encoded movies to
its TriDef Movie Player licencees, including Sharp Corporation ('Sharp') with
whom DDD recently announced a three-year software licencing agreement for its
new Actius RD3D notebook computer.
Commenting on the agreement, Ben Stassen, Founder and CEO of nWave said, "As a
leader in the production of digital 3D content, nWave has pioneered the market
for 3D large format movies and theme park ride films. 3D has been an important
component of out-of-home entertainment and it's moving into the home thanks to
these new 3D glasses-free computer displays. The computer is a great multimedia
platform that we see as the pre-cursor to the advent of 3D television."
Greg Nakagawa, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Sharp Systems of
America said: "nWave's 3D movies are an excellent addition to the Actius RD3D.
The movies showcase the power of the platform with very compelling, high quality
3D storylines that will entertain and enthrall our customers. The addition of
feature length 3D movies complements the entertainment uses of the Actius RD3D
very well."
Chris Yewdall, Chief Executive of DDD added: "The license agreement with nWave
is yet another important commercial milestone for DDD. Through licencing our
TriDef Movie Player for use with 3D displays, we are creating incremental
revenue channels for DDD that yield revenue each time 3D display owners buy new
3D DVD movies. We are very pleased that we have been able to open up this
additional distribution channel for nWave and we look forward to bringing more
high quality 3D content to our licencees in the future."
