                           CHAIRMAN'S AGM STATEMENT

At today's Annual General Meeting of the company John Wardle made the
following comments:-

"As set out in the preliminary announcement, trading to the end of June was
satisfactory.  July and early August saw disappointing trading due to
unseasonal weather.  Trading since late August has improved as the better
focused autumn/winter product offering came into the stores reflecting the
conscious effort to further differentiate our ranges from those of major
competitors.

At 31 March 1998 the company was operating from 103 stores occupying 265,000
retail square feet.  15 new stores have been opened during the period to date
and one store has been relocated.  The company is presently operating from 118
stores occupying retail space of 330,000 square feet.  Formats include 12 out
of town stores which trade from a total of 76,000 square feet.

Overall the Board is pleased with the benefits which are being gained from the
strengthened management team and the return to the principal focus of the
company of being the UK's leading sports fashion retailer."
