BOARD APPOINTMENT

Mr Anthony Coombs, 44, has been appointed to the Board of financial services
group S & U plc, as a full time Executive Director from 1st July 1997.

Mr Coombs has spent the last ten years as MP for Wyre Forest, latterly as a
Government Whip.  He was previously a Director of S & U from 1980 to 1987.

Commenting, Anthony Coombs said today:

"I welcome this opportunity of returning to S & U at what I consider to be a
most exciting time and look forward to playing a full part in the company's
continuing development".
